    4.6 motor with 4.0 ECU?

    Hi there,

I have just built a new Top hat 4.6 for my Disco and are still using the original 4.0 motronic and ECU, anybody had experince with this if it, maybe timing or injection shortfalls?

I have just started driving it and is running excellent, once it is run in I will get it to the Dyno to check the AFR

it also is running on gas too

    cheers Dean

4.6 with 4.0 runs fine for me but ask the major chip maker for the V8 land rover Tornadochip and they say it underperforms and runs lean in parts and rich in other parts of the map and you are better off with P38 air box top
and wider intake tubing and bigger MAF and 4.6 ECU or even better the Tornado 4.6 retune. Pedro will chime in shortly as he has been through all this. Cheers

I have just done the same, 4.6 top hat liner, also with PC 216 cam, supplied by Rover Triumph Spares in SA. They reckon they go ok on original ECU. I haven't had much chance to evaluate it yet, but a check over a 250 km trip recorded 25 mpg (I still relate better to mpg than 11.3 l/100km) which is the best I have recorded yet.
Just a feeling, but it seems to need less throttle opening to achieve same result as before. Time will tell I guess.

There are a lot of new 4.6's out there running on the 4L fuel map. I towed the van for 8 months with one,,

However, the Tornado remap makes perform it better.
I would love to read the LPG dyno report Dean

There is a little bit of mucking around to change the air inlet piping to 4.6 sizing,,
but if you buy a Tornado you really need to do it.

to be fair I am just happy if it will give some good reliable use with out trying to turn itself inside out

Where you really notice the 4.6 is when towing a heavy load or in very soft sand. It's very noticeable and satisfying/fun. Cheers

The final 4.6's put out 407Nm,,
as no-one that rebuilds one would use a standard cam, they should all put out more than that.

in comparison the last TD5 put out 300,

Now let's compare apples with apples 4.6 motor with 4.0 ECU?

    A rebuilt 4.6 makes about 440nm

    A tuned TD5 makes about 550nm 4.6 motor with 4.0 ECU?

    What about a tuned 4.6?

Not a lot more than about 440...
Beyond that they become unfriendly to drive.

My Supercharged 5.0 was the most tractable I've driven and that was only in the 500s..
