    Disco 2 front propshaft

Not that technically minded so looking for some advice.
I have been told by my mechanic that I should consider renewing front drive shaft as not moving as freely as it should.
That's all fine but I was wondering if I happen to be on a trip and it got really bad is it possible I can removed the front propshaft and still drive the car 2wd effectively. I think I could but looking for reassurance.
    It's a 2001 Discovery 2 TD5, automatic, no diff locks.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Yes you can Paul,,
lots of posts in the D2 Forum about this,,
and lots of ways to go to repair/replace said propshaft.

You should fix it if you have the first inkling of trouble.

why a Mech would take it off, shake it about, tell you its not nice and REPLACE it is mind boggling.

Thanks for that. I might be doing the Mech an injustice as not sure how he checked, I don't think he removed it lets just say jiggled for play.
My concern was that he said I couldn't take it off and drive as a 2wd as I didn't have a diff lick?
I couldn't see why this would matter so came here for some advice.
I have ordered a new heavy duty propshaft from the US I'll change them out as soon as it gets here.
    Thanks again.

Without a centre diff lick if you remove the front prop shaft the power will follow the path the least resistance which will be to the front of the TC case which has nothing connected and you wont be going anywhere. You need to be able to lock the centre to be able to have the rear wheel moves.

2001 might be an iffy date, there may be no actual centre diff lock internals.
If the nose of the transfer box has the spigot then it has the internals and you need a 10mm spanner from memory to turn it to engage while underneath.

This is what I've managed to photograph. Is this the spigot? Turn the bottom to engage?

    Yes.

Just remember to shift it back when you re-install front shaft.

    How far will it go?

Your problem will be how far you manage to go and whether you catch it in time.

If it breaks the shaft will flail around driven by the front wheels doing untold damage under the car.

I heard mine 'squeaking' when I left Mildura but did not have the option of taking the shaft out as my center diff is being silly buggers at the moment. It held up, I was driving very carefully, until I got home to the Adelaide Hills.

I would put off long trips or hauling heavy loads until that replacement shaft is in.

Shaft out and two wheel drive is a good option for now.

    Regards

    Mike
