Unhappy D2 TD5 transmission oil cooler hose failure

Hi all. I have an auto 99 TD5. Passenger side transmission oil cooler hose popped off and dumped ATF oil everywhere on the road. My luck in busy traffic!

I'm going to buy a B&M BM70266 this friday to replace the factory transmission cooler as one of the outlet pipes has a kink in it. Going to have the lines modified to fit accordingly to the B&M. I don't want to worry about them blowing off again because of bad engineering!

I have already removed the transmission cooler. Also replacing the intercooler with the bigger D2 update version while I'm at it along with new silicone hoses.

I have a few questions hopefully someone could answer for me. I have searched online but haven't quite found the right info.

Probably a silly question but here goes. Which side is the return oil cooler hose connected to on the factory transmission cooler; passenger side or the driver side?

Also there seems to be a temp sensor on the factory cooler on the driver side. It seems like I will have to buy a t-piece of some sort in order to attach it to the B&M cooler? Has anyone fitted this temp sensor on an aftermarket cooler?

The which end is which question I can't provide an authoritative answer, sadly. The diagram in Rave doesn't seem clear to me and seems to conflict with the textual description. The only real hint is the temperature sensor, which is drivers. I reckon that means that this is the in line to the cooler and the passenger side is the return. Only based on you wanting to know if the box is overheating at the point where it's hottest and not after being cooled.

The sensor itself is a simple on-off type and feeds only a light on the dash, it probably won't matter very much about Ting in if you're concerned about flow etc. And if you find it easier to use another sensor with the same temp on/off point then it would work just as well.

Thanks Steve. In that case I might buy a temp gauge which comes with a sender unit and fit it to the return side. I won't worry about the temp sensor off the old cooler. I have a 52mm SAAS temp gauge in mind below.

Hi Sb4, how did you go with this?
I am interested in installing one before summer and defining if I need to install and additional atf cooler.
    Cheers DDM

Good question,, a result is always nice

not at all sure why you would take off the standard transcooler ???
certain death to the auto I would think...

as to the the fitting of a second ? ( you do already have one DDman,, ) cooler,,
dont be scared,, lots of second coolers fitted on this forum,,
I gather the idea is to guage the size by usage,,
3T van= huge,, (which is what I put on-- before I was schooled)
but less than that, be degrees.
even hard work on the beach would see me fit a 2nd,,

Exactly Pedro. Only intend to install a secondary if needed. Typing on an iPhone with fat fingers and autocorrect.
Towing camper trailer, beach and Sth Aust heat may induce problems.
I have a couple of the atf cooler discussions saved for reference

I have,, and I would. For the small cost it extends the auto's life (and makes it work better!)
my only advice, FWIW I am not a fluid dynamics engineer , is to use something with 1/2" tube,, thats the standard auto cooler line size,, no pressure drop/raise.

but then I'd probably put cooling fins on the sump if I could

I was even considering changing the atf lines to AN type fittings and braided line if I can change the LR connection points.
Any idea what AN number is closest to 1/2'?
    Might ask Google
