Did you pop the belt off and try that first ?
Ok pulled starter motor out of td5 thinking it's my issue but I'm sure how it should work
It free spins one way and the other way is tight and starts pulling gear out! That mean it's ok?

Na mate unsure on what is the go
Does the pulley move and u slip it off and sit pulley back or need to get adjust right when sitting back also couldn't get spanner down there
When it cranks all of them spin but I understand it could be seizing
Just weird how it made grinding noise for couple secs then stopped and was fine and then I turned it back on and now slow cranks
The belt is a PITA, an extra pair of hands help, but you get a ring spanner without much offset on the tensioner and pull the pulley back against spring tension to take tension off the belt and then slip the belt off.
Belt on a starter motor ??? ... when it's energised it should push the gear out and spin

Sorry, my misunderstanding, i started from the OP's statement that the starter is on the bench and how should it work... about that: the starter when it's energised should push out the gear and spin, so yes, it seems that mechanically it's OK from what you described

Mclaren have a look on Youtube for how to test you starter with jumper cables, the toothed drive on the stater is the pinion drive it's a one way clutch they can crap themselves but they are tricky to test for the novice.
I have never worked on a TD5 starter but you need to have a look at the brushes and commutator before you fit it back in, someone here might tell you whats involved getting the cover off also would be good to have a look at the solenoid contacts while it's off if the rest of the starter is ok, youtube again.
How's your battery have you a Multi meter to test the voltage drop when cranking.
Small spring clamps will make a good third hand to install the belt when you check your front pulleys.
I'll just add if the only battery you have is in the Disco disconnect a terminal to test the starter incase it is shorting to earth
