Quiet TD5 exhaust - who has one?

Ok I must be getting old, but getting a bit tired of the loud noise my disco makes!

It's 3" all the way, no cat and pee wee size centre resonator and a small rear muffler. It's loud and drones around town and esp at around 80 kph. It's ok at 100 but loud when you put your foot down.

We're moving house to a nice quiet suburb and don't want to annoy my new neighbours too.

I was thinking of getting a decent big centre muffler put in.

    Would this do the job?

Dont mind slightly less performance as the car goes so well ( Bruce Davis remap)

    Cheers

3" exhaust on a Td5 is going to make more noise for little gain. A big muffler in the middle should help

If you want to retain some performance , then try out a Flowmaster Delta 50. You can get them centre in offset out which agrees with the exhaust shape and they are about the same size as the old stock muffler.

Mine is on a stock size pipe but the only audible drone is at about 2000RPM under heavy load, and it is not annoyingly loud.

BTW if you stick a rod up the rear muffler you find it is straight through so no gain at all in removing.

3" just seems unnecessarily large for a 2.5L TD motor. I imagine that is part of your noice issue. A 2.5" with decent high flow mufflers would likely have the same performance without the drone noise.

Agree! The 3" is only there as it was fitted to the disco when I bought it. And it has refused to rust out in 150,000 km and 6 years. Will see what the muffler place can do and I'll look at a Flowmaster option. May go back to stock size if the system is near end of life!

Instead of putting more funds into a system that has a fundamental flaw in what you actually want, get a factory 2.5" system from a wreck nearby, have a muffler place fit new high flow mufflers to it and fit it to your car. Sell the 3" system.

My D2a has 250,000km on it now with the factory exhaust system fitted with high flow cat converter and high flow mufflers. Factory pipe seems to be very long lasting.

Yep that's not a bad idea. And plenty of crawl space under a D2 to make figment not a complete PIA!

Hey guys, my main muffler has formed a crack down its side and needs replacing. Apparently by just putting a straight pipe in place and only having the little rear can at the rear is commonly done?
    Is this common practice?

    Is it noisy?

Is there much gain in torque?

I don't want a noisy car or forming that droning sound.

    Thanks fellas.
