    Auto trans flush method?

    Hi All,

I collected my lovely full synthetic engine and auto trans oils in Bris-Vegas the other day. On the drive home I was thinking about how to go about removing all/most of the old ATF and getting the new stuff in without too much cross contamination.

All I've read so far suggests that only about 25% of the ATF can be changed at each drain/refill cycle, yes? So, if I find the existing fluid is pretty 'orrible looking, should I perhaps buy some cheap and cheerful Dextron IID/III for the first two or three 'flush' cycles before putting my u-beaut synthetic in for another two or three cycles?

Advice from our lubrication gurii most appreciated.

How many kms ian? Personally i would change the oil and filter, run it a few kms then change the oil again. And as you are going to synthetic then a 3rd change would be a good idea...

    A possibility for you....

We built 2 short "bridge" lines from an old cooler return line from a wreck and another from a spigot cut from a holed cooler on the same wreck. We changed the pan filter and gasket and refilled with Dex3. We separated our return line from the cooler, accessed through the plastic panel near the steering box, and replaced it with bridge drain line, with a piece of clear bong tube in the end of it to act as a sight glass, to a collection container. We used the spigot connected to a pressure can (10L pump up jobbie for filling fluids) filled it up with Dex3, pressurized it, started the car and force fed the new ATF into the system as the old ATF was being discharged to the collection container. When the AFT being discharged ran clear (clean ATF colour), everything was turned off (engine, ATF feed). We restored the whole thing to standard, ran the vehicle to ATF temp, checked for operation and correct ATF level.

A BIG difference to the transmission operation, and not so much ATF used.

Time taken was about 45 minutes.

The same process is used for D3, but with very expensive ZF ATF for the six speed.

Perhaps this could help by doing it just once. And a garden sprayer of decent volume (~12l or so) would be adequate for the job. Adapting the lines may take some thought, however.

    Cheers

Yeah, that bit had me laughing - and then descend into fit of coughing, as we're both getting over colds!!

But I think I get the drift - clear poly tube so you can spot when the clean fluid starts to come through. As I've been warned several times that the trans cooler hoses can part from the cooler fittings, maybe it won't be too painful to organise a drain/flush at this point?

Been too busy today discovering (no pun intended - no that's lie, I did intend it...) the DIA ARB hitch receivers do not fit DIIAs - and running wires for an electric brake controller and Anderson Plug. And then after smoko...
