I got a Redarc low coolant alarm fitted for under $200 by Whyatt's in Geraldton the other day.
I am not sure if the TD5's are OBD11 compliant But if they are one of those Data scan units from 4WD supercentre are pretty good as a gauge and you can have 4x different readouts at the same time with them, I think they are $70-$80 a pop.

I'd install coolant alarm before temp gauge. Coolant alarms are instant and loud.

A mechanical temp gauge is next on my list, haven't worked out where the probe gets installed on a TD5

I wonder if you can fit a probe in where the coolant drain plugs go into the block, that way you can still have the factory fitted gauge working as well as the new one.

Install a Low Coolant alarm first!!! and relax and enjoy watching the scenery and not the gauges. To monitor your engine temperature i recommend the Engine Watch Dog. The temperature pick up mounts under a convenient bolt on the engine.... i chose to use a bolt right beside factory engine temperature sensor and set the alarm at 100C Never seen the temp rise above 97C... but gotta say I only ever seem drawn to check the gauge reading out of curiosity...

The Td5 is not OBD2 compliant.

IMO the coolant temp gauge is compulsory before anything else as the dash gauge stays at the middle up to 120*C and if let's say the viscous fan doesnt work well(quite common) the coolant temp will be around 110-115 without even knowing it, that's not good on a long run and in this case the coolant level warning is useless but if the level drops much the coolant temp will start rising so you'll know anyway, the engine can run hot for many reasons others than low coolant and it's better to know if it's the case... i dont have coolant level alarm but last time when i lost coolant i observed that on the temp gauge as it started to go above 100 then i stopped and checked, off course that the best is to have them all but if i was to choose only one gauge the ECT would be my first choice, and the EGT the second .

the simplest way i found is to remove the elbow, drill into it and cut the proper thread for the sensor, that's how i did on mine and it's OK

Thanks for the replies- as always, very helpful. Found the low coolant alarms in the aulro shop for less than I previously thought. And like the tap set up also Sierrafery.
Recently headed to Lamington NP and Condamine River. The steep hill climbs were a nice SLOW drive, but definitely would have felt safer with both an alarm and gauge.
