    TD5 Discovery 2 Automatic Issues

Had a down gear change clunk 3rd to 2nd. Also had slow morning transmission take up time up to a minute.

Thought time to check and change auto trans fluid.
The oil that came out was black. Drained and replaced filter then new fluid.
Wow clunk in 1st to 2nd ,2nd to 3rd ,3rd to 4th up and down. Did some checking, Maybe the upheaval of muck had blocked some of the actuators and solenoids .
Continued to flush at around 3 litres per flush as thats about all the pan handles.
No sign of slippage but clunk , clunk.
Anyway after mechanical advice the diagnosis was NEW AUTO TRANSMISSION.
I didnt quite get it as there was only the original 4th to 3rd clunk and sluggish starts and now $4500 at least on a 420,000 km car.
I decided to play around and continued to flush fluid. The clunks eventually reduced to the point of 1st to 2nd up and down. Sometimes 4th gear selects other times not. Sometimes 2 minutes to engage drive or reverse other times instant.
Just Returning from 700 km round trip where it would not select 4th gear for the last 350 km. Started to slip to an undrivable position today , and I thought all was done. Pulled over turned off , sat for 1 minute. Started selected drive and away she went, no slippage , little clunk 1st to 2nd but nothing like it was and at 70kph decided to select 4th gear.

Am I right in thinking all is not lost, is an electrical fault reset by turning off the ignition. I have a nanocom and no codes are stored.
Ive never had something fail like this and reset as though nothing was ever wrong.

    Any one any thoughts. Thanks

Mate , just like us , auto transmissions are dying from the first day of their lives.

You can extend their life by regularly changing the fluid so that the fluid doesn't lose it's lubing qualities, but it is a bit optimistic to think that you can start to do that at 400KK.

You have had a fabulous life from the trans. The odds are with a manual you have done 3 or 4 clutches in that time for a similar cost, not to mention a possible gearbox rebuild..

Maybe try to find a good lower mileage transmission from someone like Outback 1 who specializes in D2 if the aim is not to over capitalize the D2.

420K? If it's on it's first time around it belongs in a museum, the Smithsonian maybe.

$4,500? Check out importing one from Ashcroft Transmissions ( many threads on here) , and having someone good fit it. Cheap ain't worth it. Ask me how I know.

Don't overthink it, it is probably buggered. 420K. Sheesh.

All indications are that it is shot , just wondering why it reset and ran perfectly after turning off. Ive had other autos die but not like this.

Thanks, that would make sense. Pressure off, reset. If the worn out part of the box is breaking down creating more sludge. Just not sure why the slipping wouldnt be there all the time. At the KM I will probably scrap the car , so just clutching at straws.

2002 Land Rover Disco2 gearbox issue.

If my gearbox has lost all gearbox function other than 1st and reverse gears ... does this ring any bells for you experts out there? It's a Td5 auto. I am wondering if this is more likely to be :

    1. New transmission required.

    -or-

    2. Maybe a Control Module or ancillary unit. Electrical? Fluid problem?

I wonder also how much an educated guess would put the possible repair at. $1000, $2000, $3000?

I know this is a difficult (if not silly) question, but I have to start somewhere.
