    TD5 sump plug query

As far as I am aware the TD5 sump plug is a 17mm. So if I was to buy a (cough cough) 17mm helicoil insert tap and drill bit kit, the existing sump plug will fit? The problem I have is that the drill bit is too big for my drill. Is there a way around this that does not involve a lathe?
Does any one have one with a thinner shank?

    Thanks

    Julian

Could try and find a stepped 17mm drill bit...wouldn’t be stocked in too many places.

Maybe a M18 Tao will go through the existing hole than use a M18 bolt as you plug

Maybe a sump from a wreckers??

The sump plug head is 17 mm , so the thread size and pitch will be smaller , probably around 15-16 mm , can't remember , pitch will probably be 1.5 mm

The plug appears to be M16 x 1.5, shouldn't be hard to get a suitable insert for.

Yes, just checked my brand new replacement plug - M16 x 1.5.
A 17mm thread would be very unusual.
(The new plug is just like my old one, except the new one has sharp points on the hex head... )

Just had a look at the Acme website: An insert with a M16x1.5 internal thread insert has an external thread of M22x1.5. The tapping drill size is 20.50mm. So, you're looking at some pretty expensive hardware. Might be cheaper to take it to someone who already has the right gear or try to find a mobile thread repair business.

Maybe you could retap the hole and put an oversize plug in there

    Size reduction of drill-bit shank

    Hi Julian,

If you have some 10 mm (say) steel rod, what about bronze welding it to the flat end of your 17 mm drill bit.
I have used this trick to greatly increase the reach of a drill bit.
Just line up the axes of round-bar and drill-bit as well as you can and weld them end-to-end.
A couple of pieces of small angle-iron (or aluminium) nested horizontally one inside the other can be used to support and align them.

    Cheers,
    Andrew
