My new to me, D2 rides like a boat in a storm. Rocking and rolling along the road. It has done 117,000 and I suspect the shockers are done. After those k's??? The problem I have is the previous owner fitted Donaldson springs in place of the rear airbags. I would like to put the airbags back on but that may mean different shocks on the rear as it does seem to sit up a bit at the back. I am not sure why the bags were removed. I am waiting for my Nanocom hoping I can test the compressor, ECU etc for airbag system before ordering bags. The other issue is finding what else was removed that the airbags may attach to. I guess more study of the manual will help. Any thoughts?
Most people (including the previous owner of my D2) remove the airbags because they’re sick of trying to fix the air leaks that develop with age/poor maintenance schedule.
I put air bags back into my D2 & I won’t go back to springs if I can help it.
I inspected the airlines (which were ok) and installed new conti airbags. Then I pulled out the compressor. Visually the compressor looked ok & I bought a ‘bagpipingandy’s’ rebuild kit. I never installed it as my compressor seems to work fine. I found (as you probably will also) that the valve block (where the airlines go into inside the compressor housing right next to the compressor) was leaking badly. My bags would fully deflate in 6-8 hours. So I bought a new SLS Valve Block from the UK. I couldn’t find any new ones here in Australia. Then I took it to my Land Rover specialist (I don’t have a nanocom yet) and they turned it all on and set the ride height for me.
I’ve had no issues at all so far. The ride height is constantly the same regardless of load, and the ride is definitely more comfortable.
The only thing I’ve got to do is install 2” air spring spacers. I’ve got the ride height set to 2” above standard to account for my front lift. Im not sure if it’s an actual issue or not, but I’m concerned about over stretching the bags when off road. The spacers I bought from Les Richmond Automotive in Victoria.
Hope that helps. As for shocks, when you take them off you should find out pretty fast if they’re due to be replaced or not. Plus on the grand scheme of things if your going to the effort of replacing your springs why not do the shocks also? It will ride better.

Get the airbags working again. Get a decent brand and they will last at least 7 years.
So much better than springs. Easy to change. Self levelling no matter what load is in the car or what you are towing. Even better if you have ACE also.
You can get quality airbags. from Roverlord.

Jason
