The TC also locks up in third and second, either in drive or when selecting manually, depending on throttle position and load. I think it locks up in first too in low range.
Temps will climb while climbing, you're increasing load, so the engine is working harder and generating more heat. Temps won't stay steady, and FWIW the t/stat isn't fully open until approximately 14* past the point it starts to open.
Anything over a hundred and you need to be 100 percent sure of your cooiling system, and the TD5 has lots of hoses to check.
Running the Torque Converter ( TC ) unlocked will heat the transmission oil. Yes you can cook the trans this way.
You need to physically (get under and twist!) check the flex to solid transmission cooler lines... dont lie underneath the connection,,, just in case--![]()

Third locks at 70Kmh on light throttle and about that on heavy. It will stay locked down to 50Kmh.
4th locks at 80Kmh and stays locked down to 70Kmh.
You can drive locked for most of the time if you remember that.
The way to tell if locked is when you increase acceleration the revs do not flare.
I drive around the city in 3rd locked in 70zones. I understand that the manual says to drive in 3rd if driving slowly for extended periods.
I don't think it locks in low ratio but will stay in a set gear if the M/S button is pressed.

Thats nice Chris,, the V8's RUN at 96 and go up from there---
or at least the silly ones still do

I've seen the part No listed as PEM100990 for the Td5, and it's rated at 87°C.
I can't remember the exact part No. I have for my D2 V8, but looking inside the housing it's stamped 78°C.
Same thermostat tho, that is you can use a Td5 one on a V8, TD5 thermostat is just oriented a little differently than the V8 .. I think(from memory) it lays flat/sideways whereas on the V8 it's positioned vertically.

My 2002 TD5 has an 82C thermostat and usually runs between 82 and about 86 with 90+ on long uphill towing. only once touched 100C on NSW Alpine way 21Km climb. That is 82C first cracking and probably 88 fully open. BTW the fan cuts in at approx. 94C AFAIR.
My limiting factor towing is EGT which can exceed 700 C even with engine temp of <90C. So really the key thing to watch is EGT not engine temp so much.
I have to be careful with cruise control especially when towing. As soon as you lose even a little speed , it will just accelerate flat out and EGT skyrocket.
2002 EU3 with a few mods.
