D2 '04 auto gearbox drive issue

    Hi There,

Back into a D2 TD5, let the fun begin...……. Ok so it's an 04 auto Classic model not that should make any difference, when taking of initially from cold if I select D and drive top gear doesn't engage, suspect the revs would just keep on rising until something blew up. However if I start off in 3 and drive until above say 65 klm / hr and then move the selector into D the top gear engages, from then on stopping starting and driving all gear changes are faultless, as per normal. If I stop the engine and then start off again I have to go through the same process, doesn't appear to be related to the engine and gearbox being cold or at running temp.

I have no lights on on the dash, no faults recorded, any ideas, anybody had anything similar? What was the fix...……?

Thanks for any assistance rendered...……… Cheers Marty

4th will not lock up until next normal temp has been reached. By starting 3rd, you are probably locking up in 3rd, obviously won’t get into 4th.

If you treat yourself to a Heavy Duty TC, you get lock ups all over the place, a quicker and more economical car, and so much more pleasurable to drive as it now lives permanently in the torque band. Car feels happy, driver feels happy, best mod you can do.

    Hi there,

Done 311,000 klms and I have bought from a 1 owner from new, yet to do a trans service and have a look at the condition of the oil, the owner was fastidious with servicing so I'm hoping that it isn't a transmission fault and more of a selector problem. The heavy duty box sounds interesting, is this something you get done to the original box or something you buy specifically already built as heavy duty?

4th selects and then briefly after selecting locks up, it is the "won't go into 4th without starting off in 3 and then going to D" that has got me stumped..... I was hoping the oil level might be low or something simple like that, I have yet to have a look myself, I only picked the Disco up yesterday, still finding out its quirky bits... .

Sounds similar to the issues I had with my first box. 99% sure that it was caused by poor swages on the cooling lines.
Check them both, but passenger side underneath the power steering box is classic for going.

It drags in air and aerates the oil and causes a load of issues. You have nothing to lose by checking!

There is another issue which is mentioned on Ashcrofts site, something about sprag clutch and no drive unless you select first.

Have a read of all the issues on Ashcrofts site as that is great source of info for what to watch for.

give it a service - easy to do might be the filter blocked up and restricted causing issue (they dont have a by pass so as they clog up less oil gets feed to the trans)
do you have a nanocom or simerlar ? if so have a look at it when driving and see the xyz switch and solenoids are working

Thanks for all the hints and tips, a service / oil change is on the cards for this weekend, I’ll progress from there.

best bet is to drop pan and check the filter pull it apart to see how much crud is in it, buy a new one 1st there is a magnet that is in bottom of sump this will give an indication of wear. 311 000 kms is a good run for those transmissions,
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.
