There is a small fan behind the grille behind the ignition key which is part of the climate control system. You can hear it when you first turn the ignition on and listen carefully.

		Hi all,
Ive been driving a D1 300 tdi for the past couple of years and have recently upgraded to a D2 td5. It seems when I am driving and come to a stop I can hear what I can only describe as an electric motor working from behind the glovebox area. Does anybody have any idea what this may be?
Thanks in advance

SubscriberThe fan for the air sampler gets blocked up with fluff, nose droppings etc.
You can remove the grill and vacuum the detirus out.

That sound for me seems to emanate from behind the climate control unit. Mine is a V8 and I'd always guessed it was a vacuum servo controlling vents or something like that. It's definitely not the sampler fan - it's an electric motor which runs for 2 or 3 seconds.
I can't recall if it happens every single time the vehicle comes to a stop or not - I've become used to it I suppose.
Yep happens for 2-3 seconds also. Not 100% sure if its always when i come to a stop, but thats the only time i seem to hear it. Its not worrying me just was wondering what it could be. Thanks for the replies anyways guys.

SubscriberIf you want to have a look, then you can see the rods etc by removing the RH lower dash panel, below the drop down part.
I noted mine still had some white grease on after all these years.
I was trying to find a route for my new antenna cable.
