If the electronic control unit for the automatic transmission (located underneath the passenger front seat) is replaced, does the vehicle VIN need to be written to it using a Nanocom or such device?

All you need to do with nanocom is to reset the EAT ECU's addaptive values, the VIN is in the ROM(read only memory)

On my Nanocom Evolution, if I go Discovery II / TD5 / [second page] / AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION / SETTINGS / [second page] you will see this:

However it doesn't work. Hitting the white box takes you to the text entry screen with the keyboard but no characters can actually be entered. Hitting the 'WRITE VIN' button brings up a warning asking if your sure, I went no as I didn't want to do any damage.
The only reference I can find to this in the Nanocom manual (BOSCH AUTO BOX GS8_87_0_Disco II ECU guide for the Bosch Autobox GS8_87_0 Discovery II available at bosch-auto-box-gs8-87-0-disco-ii Downloads & Support - NANOCOM Diagnostics ) is on p. 2 under the heading 'BOSCH AUTO BOX GS8.87.0 - Diagnostic Capabilities (Settings)':
- VIN: Gives the Vehicles VIN number. Also an option to write the VIN
This is what I am currently doing. I have removed my IGG 000 070 and fitted a UHC500010 which seems to be the last model listed for the V8 Discovery 2.
So far all that has happened is M&S lights on the dash hence why I thought maybe I needed to program the VIN into it through the Nanocom.
Done twice and still M&S lights on the dash. I haven't actually started the engine though, only rolled the key over to ignition/accessories position and the dash lights illuminate.

IMO the replacement ECU you bought is FUBAR or your battery got weak, i've changed not one and none of them triggered the M+S... and as long as the ECU is not faulty it's not supposed to do that regardless of any programming... sorry about what i said about VIN, i didnt check nanocom's ability for that but in the ZF docs about the D2's EAT ECU the VIN appears as "read only". Anyway i dont think it makes any difference as i've never did that and the ECUs all worked.

Did you disconnect the battery when you did the change ? Just wondering if that makes the ECU read the tranny controller
No I didn't. Probably should have.
Vehicle hasn't been started since September but it was on the Ctek charger for half of the day prior so I assumed the battery was charged but didn't check. Might start with trying to fully charge it. Always a possibility that the ECU is fried given that it's from a wreck.
Started the engine and it idled for a while and then the M&S lights were gone. Read the errors codes with the Nanocom and there was only 1 about the battery, cleared it and all seems fine.
