Usually the end bushes give out because no-one ever services a starter motor any more. A drop of oil at each end every 2 years is optimum, as well as a general check of the brushes.

Oh and any V8 starter will fit, although the 1990's Bosch starter is the best.

Yep it will be the brushes. There are 4 in there working in pairs, so if one gets too worn or stuck your starter will be working at half capacity.

The replacements brushes are cheap as chips $17 for the 4 but that repair involves soldering them on to the carrier. You can get a set with the carrier but I think they were more like $80 for the Bosch starter.

The starters on the THOR are the hi-torque type with a little planetary gear set in the front. When I replace mine on my D2 years ago with a Bosch starter it only lasted 18 months before it failed. That Bosch one was $380 with only a one year warranty.

I replaced that one with a OEX Starter for $160 with a 3 year warranty. It was the same hi-torque type and lasted without any issues till I sold it.

I will definitely use the OEX brand over Bosch next time I have to replace a starter or other major electrical component.

Earlier versions (not sure of later versions) have a little clutch arrangement inside and this can fail causing hit and miss starting - the clutch arrangement can be purchased separately to the starter and fitted.

I have my old 3.5 starter on my 4.6 and it turns over no issues.

Not very big huh,,
but its fitted and starts up like a 15 year old...
