    Auto trans reliability

G'day Folks, previously owned Range Rovers (73+77) and now have a 2002 Discovery 2, 4.0 V8 with auto trans. My query is how reliable are the autos in these considering we will be towing a pop top caravan. Trans fluid is clean and seems to change ok. All comments welcome.

Mate these are not D3's 4's etc. They are a basic and strong box.

    Cheers

Generally pretty good - same trans for later RRC, Commodore etc. Can't remember whether P38 had 4HP 22 or 24.
For D2s (TD5 anyway) should be at least 250k km before rebuild unless abused. mine on 280K km and going strong, and I tow a 3.5T brick on occasions - but also have a professionally upgraded ATF cooler, temp gauge and change oil on my mechanics recommendation - between 20 - 50K km.
There is a current thread on here about longevity.
    Enjoy/cheers

Service it every 20,000K's (Including the filter) and you won't have a problem

I have a D1 with 300k which is a non-electronically controlled version of the D2 box. Shifts beautifully. Cheers

ZF 4HP22 Td5 automatic transmission - how long did yours last before rebuild/replace?

Sure, it’s about the 4HP22 fitted to the TD5, but the 4HP24 fitted to the V8 is a better/stronger version. Should give you a good idea regarding your question.

Not if you are towing regularly and the cost is minimal, It's called "Preventative Maintenance" and if you expect the Best from your 4WD it is a good habit to get into
Too many people ignore the transmission, transfer case and diffs when servicing their 4WD's, They all run in oil and that oil doesn't last forever despite the BS long service intervals being spouted on new vehicles.
Sure you can get away without regular services of the drivetrain But once that oil degrades (and it Will) the components will wear Much faster and Will eventually fail.
For a minimal cost and a few hours work every now and then your 4WD will not only perform to spec it will also last Much longer and will be more reliable to boot.

Personally I would Much rather change out the oil/fluids and filters while they are still in good/reasonable condition that to wait until they are stuffed and have already started to damage the componentry
Penny pinching on servicing is False Economy as oil and filters are So much cheaper and easier to replace than engines and drivetrain components.

    ....
D2 V8's (here is Aus) use the 4HP22E same as the Td5.
D2's in the USA use the 4HP24, for those models with the 4.6 V8, but 4.0lt V8's use the same trans(model).
From reading, there's a few differences between the Td5 and V8 models of trans. But overall, same trans.

True but also these trans hit remarkable ks even when serviced at longer internals in my experience so very strong boxes.

    Cheers
