I can unlock the vehicle manually with the key okay. I've disabled the bonnet alarm switch, so now my primary
problem is that when I connect the new battery, the horn starts to sound, which is really unacceptable due to to
the proximity and vigilance of my elderly neighbours. I just lightly tap the negative battery lead on the battery
terminal, and of course only get a tiny little "quack" LOL.

So... assuming I warn my neighbours in advance, for how long does the alarm sound, and what's the first thing
    to do to disarm it?

Lock and unlock the door with fob—not with the key, but the fob itself?

Yes, won't unlocking with the fob disable the alarm?

Whilst I'm thankful for the responses so far, the 2000 TD5 (mine at least) cannot be locked and/or
]unlocked with the fob if the vehicle battery is flat. One must use the key manually to do either.
The fob is therefore effectively useless in my scenario, as the actuators obviously need 12V power.

By George... No vehicle can be unlocked with the fob as long as the battery is flat..., if it's flat remove it completely and you'll not hear any sound then... wasnt this thread about how to unlock it once you put a good battery after post #13?

Guys... you've all missed the point. Sorry, but...

I've fitted a brand new battery in the vehicle.
When I try to connect the negative lead, the alarm sounds.

My final question is: How do I disable the alarm and/or horn?

But did you unlock with the fob after you fitted the battery ? or the new battery is flat ? ... as about your final question, you can disable it with nanocom or similar BUT NOT AS LONG AS IT'S IMMOBILISED like it is. So you have to remobilise it with the fob or with EKA code first

    though here's your latest post

So somebody is certainly missing something unless your new battery is flat

1: make sure all doors are closed and locked.
2: place negative terminal on to battery with one hand and press unlock on fob with other.
3: reflect through the thread to see how many tried to tell you this.

lets make sure we're on the same page

you connect the battery and the alarm goes off?
you then press the unlock button on the fob multiple times?
