I weasn't sure whether to put this here or in general discussions, but here goes.
Given that the TD5 is so far the last of the genuine LR diesel engines, is anyone aware of a single document (or set) of its comprehensive history?
I guess ideally to include its development (although that is a story in its own right) and its use, including enhancements introduced during its lifespan.

I remember something about adding a cylinder to make a straight six and removing a cylinder to make a straight 4.

As it was used in both the D2 and Defender, maybe in the LR History section of the forum?

I can move it there.

Thanks Ron. Getting a good reaction, so maybe leave it here for the moment please.
Slunnie - thanks - ironically I have that article, which led me to the broader question, particularly enhancements over its life from steel dowels to EC3 to ??
Perhaps should also look at mods a la TD5Inside/Jose's racing efforts

I read recently , never bothered to check if correct or not , but the TD5 was re-incarnated by Ford and its the 3.2 engine in the Ranger. the article said its the same engine just bored out to 3.2 as the original TD5 was kept at 2.5 to appease the euro emission laws. The article went on to say that it was these emission laws that always hindered L/R and why it never managed to compete with the likes of Toyota in many countries including Australia.
It wasn't in a L/R mag either , think it was about Ford from memory.

I scanned these many moons ago.

Life is just a series of obstacles preventing you from taking a nap.
Sorry but that is an urban myth. Other than 5 pots there is nothing common between the two engines - the Ranger engine is a development of the Puma engine and has nothing to do with Land Rover.
The TD5 has turned out to be an orphan engine - designed by LR for the way ahead but various takeovers meant it was used only for a short time in only the Disco 2 and Defender. It has no relationship to the FL1 Td4 and RR Td6 engines which are both BMW engines.
