You also have to determine which temp sensor switch/connector - the one on the gbox oil cooler or the transfer case unused connector.

Yeah, did you also check the transfer case oil level?

I had a trans temp light come on in my D1 a few years back.
Was up in the high country 300 k from home, and didn't have my IR temp gun with me at the time(didn't really need it )

but under the car, and touched trans sump with hand to check a rough guide as to temp.
Obviously hot, but didn't feel 100°C + hot, which is when the trans temp light is supposed to come on(something like 103 or 105 or whatever).
Sump felt more like mid 60's. As I used to make coffees, that was a roughly comfy hot temp we heat the milk jug up too to get a good coffee temp, so used to it a bit.
Or, if you have a standard tank type hot water system, water generally comes out at 65ish degrees .. so you get an idea.
If at 100°C, when the warning light comes on, you'd feel the heat well before your skin touches the trans sump!

Anyhow, my trans felt colder than the warning light supposedly warned me of(also felt the transfer case too, and it was a bit hotter), so kept driving.
Ignored light all the way home, then next morning light cam on from stone cold .. so I knew it was a dud sensor.
Obviously changed the auto trans sensor, and all good again.

    Because you said this:

I'd suspect the auto sensor first, then the T/C sensor next(if the oil level is OK).
Locate the sensors(trans is on the oil cooler) pull plug if you get the light on again to determine which one is coming on.

    part numbers are:

    UBI100030 - trans sensor
    PRC7984 - TC temp sensor

The fluid will be from the joins in the exterior cooler lines,

for whatever reason LR made these without a flare on the hard pipes and eventually/sometimes the rubber lines just come off,
    nice huh.
Usually self preservation makes you stop to see whats burning before the box runs completely dry.
and usually/sometimes the box will survive.

Does the manual have a temp sensor on the transfer case? If not, can it be fitted?

And there was a recall on them for the early vehicles that were not fitted with the flexible lines.

But i would say any that didn't get sorted by now, would have cracked the lines long ago.

Manual V8s have the TC sensor fitted but manual TD5s don't. However the wiring plug is tucked away above the transfer case and the hole for the sensor is fitted with a bung, so its an easy job to fit the sensor.

Maybe he's gone around a bigger block? The 7 km was a tad short.

Maybe Paul Jonsey lives on an escarpment?
