    just put some loctite on the thread and do it up tight.
    the nut simply retains the splined axle end in place

    Thanks Daz. It does seem like overkill but that's what I was going to do, having investigated buying either Loctite 640 or Permatex 64000 as Bunnings doesn't have them. I've got some Loctite 620 so I'll use that.

    No mas Amigos!

    I fitted the new hub on Tuesday and, touch wood, the amigos are gone. I did it according to www.discovery2.co.uk / Front Wheel Hub / Bearing Assy and it was an easy enough job. Why anybody would even think about following the RAVE procedure I can't imagine. I torqued up the nut using the standing on the breaker bar method outlined earlier in this thread. The old bearing was looking pretty ropey so I'm not surprised that the sensor was misreading. So, thanks again to everybody for advice offered.
