Out of interest when do you watch videos on it?
I'm curious as I can't see why anyone would when driving as they're driving, I can't see why anyone would when camping as what's the point of going off outdoors to sit in the car watching videos and I can't see why anyone would when at home as you could go inside and use the bigger telly in the lounge!

I doubt you will ever see features like this. The reason why the Apple CarPlay apps are limited is because for safety reasons they don't want you to have videos etc. while driving (the whole reason the handbrake signal is used to stop the other video playback features). If you can mirror your phone onto it then you can play video content etc. while driving. You are correct that this means we loose other benefits, but really what should be happening to resolve this is that Hema should make their App CarPlay computable so that it can be used through the unit - this would be the proper method that avoids safety concerns.
I did send an enquire to HEMA about this. Short answer it is not in their short term business modelling however not ruled out for later in the future.

    Cheers, Chris

Possibly in the next few years as the Apple Carplay and Android Auto becomes more common place it'll likely make it more tempting for them.

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a great safe idea or legal... Hence the reason for the handbrake signal requirement in the wiring.

    Ditto!

Mind you in Melbourne I frequently see Uber drivers watching Youtube on their phone hanging off the windscreen when I pull up next to them at the lights.

My Sony unit allows mirroring, which I didn't realise as I wasn't looking for it. I've finished setting it up yesterday and tested it while in gear, all functions remained active as I spliced the parking brake trigger wire with the ground. I set it up that way out of convenience for the installation rather than to watch telly while cruising, but I like the idea of not having to pull over on the freeway if I need to get into the settings.

So far the unit performs, Google Assistant isn't as responsive as one would hope but this is a microphone/Android Auto issue most likely. I'll post some photos soon, I still have to take it back out to change the mounting assembly as the unit is not fastening in. It's not going anywhere for now but I wouldn't want to take an uphill track!

@twr7cx: Out of curiosity, what cage/brackets did you use for your Halo?

I modified a single DIN Clarion cage. I'm not happy with it though. Too much wiggle/play. Need to do something better but I'm not sure what/how...

You might want to check out the CarPlay2Air unit if you want to turn your Sony into having wireless connection.
