Yes, it's quite do-able. I bought my D1 a little over 9 years ago, and did a couple of short trips sleeping in a swag and tent. I saw a couple of vanlife type YouTube videos using a D1 and thought I might give it a go. Maybe do a bit of a YouTube hunt and get some ideas off those?
For two or three big trips, I removed the rear seats, added a makeshift drawer setup (ie cheap!) and then made up a rudimentary extention (with a support attached) that butted up to the drawers to gain a flat space so I could sleep inside. I did have to push the front passenger seat forward and sleep on a bit of an angle, and even being 6'2" tall, managed to fit ok and sleep well. Take a few measurements and see how you go.
I do different sleeping arrangements for different trips and have bought a rooftop tent to use when travelling with a partner. I still occasionally swag it or sleep in the back, but the D1 will be getting moved on shortly and I will probably be sleeping in the back of my D3 when the need arises as well.
I have found a couple of photos at Karijini from one of my early trips in the D1 before I did any mods (2" lift etc), which shows my green 6ft sleeping mat for scale. Hope that helps.
