Disco 1 and 2 - can you sleep in them?

    Hi all,
With the rear seats removed, can anyone tell me please if there is enough length for a 6 footer to sleep?
    Thanks,
    Paul

Yes, it's quite do-able. I bought my D1 a little over 9 years ago, and did a couple of short trips sleeping in a swag and tent. I saw a couple of vanlife type YouTube videos using a D1 and thought I might give it a go. Maybe do a bit of a YouTube hunt and get some ideas off those?

For two or three big trips, I removed the rear seats, added a makeshift drawer setup (ie cheap!) and then made up a rudimentary extention (with a support attached) that butted up to the drawers to gain a flat space so I could sleep inside. I did have to push the front passenger seat forward and sleep on a bit of an angle, and even being 6'2" tall, managed to fit ok and sleep well. Take a few measurements and see how you go.

I do different sleeping arrangements for different trips and have bought a rooftop tent to use when travelling with a partner. I still occasionally swag it or sleep in the back, but the D1 will be getting moved on shortly and I will probably be sleeping in the back of my D3 when the need arises as well.

I have found a couple of photos at Karijini from one of my early trips in the D1 before I did any mods (2" lift etc), which shows my green 6ft sleeping mat for scale. Hope that helps.

I just measured the D2. With the front seat in its normal position is about 5ft straight and about 5.5ft diagonal. With the FPS seat all the way forward its a bit under 6ft straight and a bit under 7ft diagonal. You would need to fill in the footwells to sleep like that.

I think it would be tight but doable. I've never slept in the back of mine.
    Cheers

I think the D2 would be just that little bit easier Slunnie. A 6ft straight and 7ft diagonal would be perfect.

I should try it one day, although I've normally got a barrier and shelves in.

Yeah, that's mostly what happened with me too (drawers and barrier) after buying the rooftop tent - except for a couple of short trips where sleeping inside was the easiest option due to short notice and minimal gear required.

Some time ago a forum poster detailed how he had rigged up a hammock inside his D2 ie ‘A’ pillar across to diagonal rear pillar. A search will likely find it Disco 1 and 2 - can you sleep in them?

we recently did a single bed in my brothers TD5.
Made a small storage box where the top isn't a single layer of ply, has 3 pieces that are hinged(piano hinges) then fold over each other. They open out towards the front.
The rear(Pass) seat stays in car, folds down to the first posi(just flat down, not forward and over), and is then used to support the bed.
Front seat needs to slide forward. Front of folded out bed has a bracket that is supported at the front seat grab handle.

It fits nicely over the 2/3rds side of the folding seat, the 1/3rd side stays as a seat, and is used to entry and egress.
Works really well for a 105kg six footer. More than enough room to sleep comfy(uses 100mm foam base).
You sleep with head at the back door, is easier.

Maybe because the bed is elevated, and the base is up near the rear door window, there are two inches of void at the rear window(maybe?? dunno). But as a six footer myself(and bro too) we have no issue with length.

Next time I'm at brothers I'll try to get a pic(never thought of it before).
    Arthur.

Thanks everyone for the replies. When the lockdowns ease, I have friends coming out from England and I want to buy a suitable camper for them. He is 6 feet tall, and I was hoping to make a camper out of a Disco, but seems I will need to get something longer. It is a pity Defenders are so expensive.... and Toyota Hi-aces are so daggy......
