I've heard brake cleaner is another alternative.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

MAF or electronic cleaner only. Maybe Isopropyl alcohol.

Isopropyl alcohol or contact cleaner NF should be OK
Brake cleaner I’d be a bit dubious of

Yea brake cleaner and parts cleaner are very bad on mafs as they leave an oily residue on the maf wires might use electrical cleaner on the maf as I have heaps in the shed.

    Maf cleaning

It was posted recently that if you have a pre facelift D2 with a 10P engine AND with an EGR DELETE then the MAF no longer has a critical function to perform and can be unplugged. Perhaps a more knowledgeable member could clarify this point.

    Correct.

In fact they can all run fine without a MAF, however I think the later ones with a MAF are better/can run more efficiently.

    Cheers

I wouldn’t expect brake cleaner to leave an oily residue as brakes and oil don’t mix
I believe it has a mild corrosive substance to help clean the brake system
Carby cleaner will as it lubricates after cleaning (also the best for spud guns)
Electrical (NF contact) cleaner is non corrosive
The CO contact cleaner is flammable and from what I’ve been told, is basically the same as brake clean without the lubricant, ie works better than the NF but don’t use it on sensitive equipment and it doesn’t leave an oily residue
I’ve used both on live electrical equipment, (young dumb and stupid) but nowadays mostly use NF contact clean when live

Take it as what you will and it’s only my opinion and experience, but when dealing with dollars unforeseen, might be worth just spending the extra $20 on MAF cleaner

I would not try this, but I have heard that long distance truck drivers ( when truck starts running rough ) pull their maf out and pour boiling water on them, then refit and keep going. Good for another 50,000 ks.
