    Alternator Advice

I have discovered that my TD5 alternator is not charging at idle but is ok above idle.

Car has 220,000 km on it.

    A few questions.

    Would this be the regulator?

If it is, is it worth replacing at this milage, or do I bite the bullet and get a new alternator?

If I go for a new one there are OE and non genuine, with a massive price difference.

    Are non genuine any good?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

The regulator and rectifier are built in and if you can afford it get a genuine, previously I had got a non genuine and it didn't last that long. Alternatively if you have time you can order rebuild kits which come with new diodes, regulator, brushes etc.

Also purchasing a new genuine one shop around, I got mine from Karcraft (they are only 2-3km from me)

There is a huge variety of them by all kind of premium brands. If you decide to get aftermarket my advice is to choose a manufacturer who you trust and buy from a seller with good customer service. I've got a Lucas cos it was available locally at a friend's store as i knew there will be no probs if it fails in warranty but it's still going strong after 8 years

Denso is OEM for the TD5, doesn't have to be direct from Land Rover, hate to think what dealers would charge, I think I paid about $500 for mine recently

The one made by Denso for LR is not the same with the aftermarket Denso(so called OEM), those for LR are made in a different section of the factory from higher quality materials or if it was made for LR and failed the tests imposed by LR but still ISO compliant it's sold cheaper under Denso brand, that's valid for all OEM ... so the higher price for genuine items is not just the sticker, believe me or not but the information is from "inside". The most relevant example is if you compare an OEM drive belt with a genuine LR made by the same manufacturer... then you can see why the genuine is more expensive.

Certainly value your input and have no doubts that what you are saying is correct.

A new one from Landrover would double the value of the vehicle and as I have already sold mine, SWMBO and eldest sons kidney's, I have no more to sell.

However here is the hard decision. I could buy five cheapies for the same amount as a genuine and carry them as spares.

However, my D2 is probably already overweight, and as I am quite capable of fitting them, I would prefer to only do it once and not be doing it in the middle of the out back.

So which one do I buy?

I'd go for a reliable branded aftermarket(not just called "OEM quality without a brand) for this particular part(as i already did with Lucas), there are other parts which are more important to be genuine... , if that Denso you linked doesnt seem too expensive for you it should be OK just dont expect it to be like genuine while it can do it's job for ages as well... it's about luck too.

Realistically a genuine Denso should be up to scratch.

I got in trouble though a few years ago with an "OEM quality" alternator.

Not even close to OEM, it looked like one of my kids had made it.

Everything was copied straight from Denso, but all undersize/lighter construction, threads were all poor quality, the wiring from the rotor to the slip rings pulled up through the resin... I'm sure you can guess how that panned out.

Credit where it's due though, it was only about $300 and it did last for about 5 weeks.

If it is Denso, it should be fine.

AAMOF if you can find LRB00369 or QRA2480 cheaper down under i can vouch for these and might be as good as the Denso... that's based on my and friend's personal experience
