With 346K on tne clock the alternator would be the least of your concerns on a nearly 20 year old 4WD.

Well I’ve fixed all the other concerns so just thinking what else hasn’t been replaced!

Just the alternator, 3 wheel hub assemblies left to replace, and I recon it’s good for another 20 years touch wood. 😊

That’s a very good price! Are you able to tell us where you bought it?

    Cheers

    A few questions.

    Would this be the regulator?

If it is, is it worth replacing at this milage, or do I bite the bullet and get a new alternator?

If I go for a new one there are OE and non genuine, with a massive price difference.

    Are non genuine any good?

I put a genuine Denso in a couple of years ago (280,000) for $500 and bought a rebuild kit from the UK including bearings for about $120 for the old one. It was one of my many lockdown projects. I would never go after market as its usually false economy

Actually, with the td5, it's really one of the only concerns.
In the V8 Disco, the alternator is approx half the concern it is in the TD5.

I got in trouble though a few years ago with an "OEM quality" alternator.

Not even close to OEM, it looked like one of my kids had made it.

Everything was copied straight from Denso, but all undersize/lighter construction, threads were all poor quality, the wiring from the rotor to the slip rings pulled up through the resin... I'm sure you can guess how that panned out.

Credit where it's due though, it was only about $300 and it did last for about 5 weeks.

If it is Denso, it should be fine.

go to an auto elect and have it rebuilt or install a new one at a time a new one is cheaper than an exchange one

    Me?

I do all my own, I'll still rebuild them, but for someone that has to pay, you really need to replace all the parts so you don't go back in, and then you'll be up for basically new money.

If rebuilding it would pay to change:

    Both bearings.
    Brushes.
    Reg.
    Probably the rectifier.
Vac pump Seal, and check the vac pump for inHg reading before re use.
    And check the slip rings.

Price all that up, it'll be more than you think unfortunately.
