    Interesting, any links to the ZF 8hp running the existing BMW TCU with the TD5?


    The ZF 4 HP 24 will take a lot more torque than the 22, and while a relatively easy and cheap conversion, it's not in the same league as a ZF8.

    So for a basic modification up to 20% of the original engine is clearly a simple one - no approval needed.

    But then under LA1, you can get approval to go up to 20% of the highest HP version offered as an option. So even if we base this on the 3.9L, this means up to 160KW, which is a 60% increase over the stock TD5.



    As long as an Engineer can tick yes to all those questions in the LA1 checklist, it should be a straightforward approval process to get certified. Would need to talk to a certified engineer to confirm what is needed.

    Thanks for the info regarding the certification guys, does not appear to be a biggie or the diffs per se (which I did not do obviously!). Don't have FB, long story, but have gotten access to the page for the conversion by others and have a link to here to one of a D2 with the conversion - Some driving videos of the Td5-8hp as we get asked all the time… | By Mwmachines 4x4 | Facebook have fun counting the upshifts as it accelerates by the dip in the tach needle.

    Trans cooler lines

    Been doing a bit more investigation and the thought came re the cooler lines, sure they had to different! No problem as I found an Australian firm specializing in the conversions for 8hp's -
    8HP Oil Cooler Adapter - BMW N57 8HP70 AND B58 8HP50 Transmissions – 8speed AU

    Have already got screw fittings on my metal trans pipe from the box, did this on the previous trans cooler update so this is going to be a lot less of a hassle than it would be having to change all the pipes over, just need to plumb to current ones to and from the cooler.

    They also have a replacement metal oil pan for the standard plastic one at $1k, but it is probably cheaper just getting a transmission guard!

    Just over $139 for the bmw shifter from england now waiting delivery.

    Prices of the gearbox, there are quite a few variants of the 8HP from the 45 on petrols, 50 on td1, but the one required is 8HP70x which are going now for about $3K, last year they were around the $2k mark but no doubt they are becoming more popular as the box is being in used more conversions.

    Watching those videos and you can see how much a modern transmission can truly transform the way a car drives.

    A 6HP or 8HP auto behind a tuned TD5 D2, would be a very nice drive and would make so much better use of the low down torque than the stock 4HP auto does.

    I hope your plans all come together, you are going to end up with a real unique and great D2 that will be a lot of fun to drive.

    RRT, that company 8speed AU are the same guys that have the youtube channel zero to 60, lots of good info, also they said about the 8hp runs so cool that they have had to fit a thermostat type arrangement to the side of the box as the cooler was keeping things too cool! even when the guy was thrashing a dual cab cruiser through the sand dunes..

    I'm (along with many others) following this next stage of your build with great interest, my ideal Disco would be VNT (although, if we are bench racing then it would be Iveco compound turbo setup) TD5, 8hp and Patrol diffs (just my preference) I think the TD5 is definitely an under rate engine performance wise but with a tune and 8 forward gears it should show up some of the small modern diesels with power, drivability and reliability

    Totally. The 4HP was great in its day and super super smooth for the time, but modern transmissions are in a whole new league.

    The other thing is the gears are so low in the Zf8HP, that first gear is very close to fitting Maxidrive 49% reduction gears when offroad in comparison to the 4HP.

    4HP22:

    1: 4.70

    Gearbox Purchased

    Funny having the gearstick arrive and that's it at the moment!

    Gearbox delivered with just 122K from 2010 BMW X5, $2450 starts making it a bit more real though. Now trawling through the information I can find with regard to the Controller as having to access the wires from the current controller cabling I would assume as they would no doubt require the same information as to throttle position etc.


    The website is stating that Sept 15 will be the production date for the adaptors so sort of looking at a mid October delivered here to Melbourne I am hoping.


    Question for the knowledgably endowed, is it easier to remove engine and gearbox or just dropping the gearbox.? If you were to drop the engine and gearbox, what would you do whilst you access to a whole lot of space in the engine bay, the powersteering,ACE etc.
