Size of bolts holding diff to axle.

What is the size of those bolts? I am thinking of putting studs or long bolts with the head cut off to make putting the diff on easier. The diff can hang of those studs/headless bolts while the other bolts are tightened up. Then the studs/headless can be removed and bolts put in.

I've done 4 diffs, never had a problem, I don't recall any issue with alignment or anything else.
I reckon it'd be a much harder ordeal with studs. imo.

I never checked the size of the bolts.

D1 uses studs in the axle case ... much much easier than the D2s bolt setup to fit the diff unit to the case.

I doubt you could use the D1s stud setup, in that from what I know, the D1 uses 3/8 nuts, so UNF studs(or maybe 3/8 studs) .. either way not metric.
I'd say the D2 uses metric. I have no idea what I did with all my bolts, they'd be somewhere, but no idea where.

I'd recommend to take a bolt to a place that has nuts/bolts/threads(eg. Bunnings).
Get yerself a couple of long bolts of the same thread pitch(or some all-thread) and make up a couple of guide/studs to help take the weight of the diff when under the car.

I just checked the D1 the diff came from before I saw AK's reply and realised it had studs, too. Two thoughts.......
if you make up studs, don't have them too long or the leverage might distort the casing,
and could you temporarily fix the diff to a trolley jack to position it and lift.
Hope it works out for you,
    Woolly.

I happened to look at both these 3/8” UNF studs yesterday when I was at KLR:

    561195 - 3/8” UNF x 1-1/4” long

    Diff Centre Stud, 3/8UNF 561195

    And

    561196 3/8” UNF x 1-3/4” long

    The plot thickens

I went back too Bunnings. The mystery bolt does fit in the M10x1.25, but it is loose. The bolt did not fit into any of the imperial sized. I think I will have to go to a wreckers and remove them, or find a nearby bolt shop. There is one in Tottenham/Footscray that sadly does not do over the counter sales, officially.

If they aren't M10, they'd have to be 3/8" UNF. I doubt you'd find UNF in Bunnings, only UNC or Whitworth. Try SuperCrap.

    3/8" UNF dimensions:
    3/8" - 24 UNF 0.375mm dia. 1.058mm pitch

If that was Keables ... very sad situation. They used to be excellent, in terms of service.

You could try Swanston Engineering too on Lt Boundary Rd(Lavo area) .. can't remember if it's Laverton or West Sunshine there, but not far off Geelong Rd.
I think Swanston is now called POPs Industrial or something like that. Just a bit north past the Shell servo, entry off a side road.
Also, across the side street is another bearing supplies place too, he had some nuts/bolts as I remember too.
We were in the area recently looking for o-rings for oil cooler, which the bearing place had ... but Swanston(POPs) didn't.

Well it is not 3/8 UNF, or 3/8 UNC. I'm thinking Whitworth! Off to Keables etc. They may be able to tell me the size. Or a wreckers, or both.
