I've put all those bits back. The only play that I could see came from the track bar, I replaced that a fw months ago.

All good .... we only adjusted them if there was free play as tested with the vehicle on the ground and note any slack in the steering wheel to road wheel if all other joints good

    Everything is back together But...

The steering is hard, then soft, like something is rubbing on something. It doesn't self centre. I'll have a look later on in the week. Put it on axle stands again get the young lad to turn the steering wheel while I look. The steering is also sloppy! I think I need to fix the stiffness before I get the steering aligned.
The drive train is really nice and quiet. The noise that I thought was the transfer case was the front diff.
I am getting a low voltage from the front left ABS sensor. This was taken out when the hub came out, I wonder if I have bent the cable too much and damaged it.

As my dad waould say, "The joys of motoring"

    Intermediate steering shaft?

I've not been able to have a look. I was hoping that soemone would say "It's the ....."
I think it is the intermediate steering shaft. Nothing else fits.
    Am I right?

Would love to tell you "it's the .... " but so many variables.

Only time I've ever had that steering effect on a LR was my RRC. My dad took it to a farm to collect some chickens.
he came back, and I headed out with it a few hrs later and had that ... "whoa! ... tight .. loose .. vague steering feeling"

Only got a few hundred meters and turned around and got back home, up on jacks and couldn't really see anything blindingly obvious. But it WAS there, just very small detail.

With the wheel in the air pushing and pulling on the wheels side to side it then became obvious that the trackbar had been bent upwards ever so slightly and rubbing on something causing the stiffness.

Thought about removing and bending back down a bit, but then the time taken to remove .. may as well just replace it(easier) .. rather than stuffing around.

So I headed back out in my SD1 at the time.

The point here is, shouldn't be too hard to get it back up on jacks, wheels off the ground and push and pull on the wheels to see if any binds down there.

As I recall, intermediate shaft hasn't caused a tightness effect for me, just a knocking through the stg wheel due to wear on the uni joint on it. But that was way back in the day in the RRC again.
Both Discos have been good to me in that department.

In one of your posts you mentioned steering guard. Can we assume that you had to remove and then refit again. Possibly an alignment issue when/if replaced or, as you mentioned .. you levered against it.
I have a feeling it'll be something simple and easy to overlook under the car.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

I left the steering guard on. The track rod and drag link are straight. The only part that could get stiff then soft, then stiff etc is the uni joint. The steering wheels move less than a quarter turn to stiffen up. I am still waiting for the you lad to return. He can move the steering wheel and I can look. I'll spray WD40, when I get some and see if that eases the stiffness.
