    Well I finally had a look at the car. the top bolt on the intermediate shaft was loose, I tightened that, no change. I had young son turn the steering wheel, the intermediate shaft was fine, the rod that is part of the steering box moved with the shaft. There was a clunking noise, and from underneath, all that movement into the steering box vanished.
    I guess the next step is to adjust the steering box to remove play, that looks like fun. Remove the intercooler hose to get better access?

    This morning, I pulled the D2 out of the garage after changing engine and gearbox mounts last weekend. Was expecting a quick test drive confirming smooth/vibrationless travel but got to the end of my street and like Zoolander my D2 could only turn one way.....

    A quick 10 point turn had me back in the driveway, wheels chocked and checking for a bent track or tie rod. After racking my brain on what I could have bent while jacking the engine off its mounts, I finally checked the linkage to the steering box. Somehow, a light auxiliary power supply cable that the previous owner had installed not inside conduit had wrapped itself tightly around the steering shaft.

    Sidecutters quickly sorted my steering issue. 2nd test drive successful.

    Imagine that happening coming down Cunninghams, or somesuch. Doesn't bear thinking about. I was out with a couple of forum members last year in my OKA. The steering locked up on a tight turn on a track. Turned out that a pinch bolt on one of the uni to spline joints on the steering shaft had worked loose and had come out far enough to foul on the body somehow. A few days previous I had been doing 110 on the New England..... This was fitted by the PO, but I can't blame him. It was me that should have checked.

    I had a problem with the steering on either the D1 or Rangie where it was binding then coming free again several times as I went from lock to lock. It turned out to be one of the bearings in the universals in the intermediate shaft seizing up a bit and because the shaft is offset the amount of movement at each bearing varies as it turns. Mine had enough length on the splines to remove it without major disassembly once the clamps were free. If you take it off to check, mark the joins and don’t move the steering wheel or the box while it’s off. I don’t guarantee that is the problem, but may be worth checking.
