Well I finally had a look at the car. the top bolt on the intermediate shaft was loose, I tightened that, no change. I had young son turn the steering wheel, the intermediate shaft was fine, the rod that is part of the steering box moved with the shaft. There was a clunking noise, and from underneath, all that movement into the steering box vanished.
I guess the next step is to adjust the steering box to remove play, that looks like fun. Remove the intercooler hose to get better access?
