    Question D2 Questions

    Hi,

I remember reading a while ago, something about the Diff lockers in the D2. Somewhere between a 2000 and 2002 model. I think they removed the function or something? I am looking at purchasing a second hand D2 and would like to confirm this,.

Also, has anyone got a PDF that details the DII specs? ie; approach, departure angles, dimensions, different options for the DII models.

And can anyone tell me the difference between a 2002 and 2004? I think they became a IIA or something?

    any help will be great
    Thanks

You'll get some more specific VIN number answers soon from this forum, I'm certain.

But to start with, the D2 had the Centre Diff Lock (CDL) function removed due to the introduction of Traction Control (TC).

However, in 2004 it was re-introduced.

More specifically only the 2001 to 2003 models had the CDL mechanism completely removed from the inside of the transmission, but the 1999 to early 2001 had the mechanism and spigot but not the lever to actuate it. This make re-instating the CDL slightly easuer in the early D2's. There is a 10mm stud on the top of the front driveshaft output. There are several companies that can provide a solution. A popular method is to buy the D2a lever and mechanism and retro-fit the functionality.

Late 2001-2003 have no 10mm stud to use for engaging the CDL and require a complete replacement of the front output section of the transfercase

    more to follow...

Thanks for that. So with the late 2001-2003 that have no 10mm, any idea what a rough cost would be to install cdl? And also cost to install a front and rear cdl?
    Thanks

The D2a lever and linkage is around $600 $700 new, second hand is rare but have seen them picked up for $300. Does not include fitting that can take around a day for the DIYer.
I dont know what the internals for tranfer box would cost, a thread was up quite recently on this but cannot remember from who.

In a nutcase....it can be done and you should escape for around $1000 give or take a bit for a 2002-2003 model.

A mate of mine has a 2001 modal d2 with the thing on the case but it just needs a kit, i think he is going to make one
And another mate has a 2003 modal d2 with the whole thing from factory so i think in late 2003 they started putting them back into them.

I'm going through this process at the moment. I wouldn't trust the VIN numbers - we did and ended up in the merde.
According to my VIN I should have had the spigot and internals - I have internals but no spigot. So I would recommend physically confirming the spigot is there. Hence have had to try to source a replacement front output casing for the transfer box.
Not as easy as it sounds as the casing needs to have the detent for the CDL and hole for the switch, although this can be "manufactured" - WildOne (Phill) provided great info on this.
    Good luck!
    Cheers

This is from Ashcrofts Transmission web page

The early Disco II"s were not supplied with a centre diff lock function for the LT 230 transfer case but this has recently become an option when ordering a new vehicle.

The first Disco II"s had the diff lock capability on the transfer case but this was then phased out on the later ones.

We are able to supply both the linkage assembly and the parts to convert the transfer case if required.
The linkage is easy to fit, cable operated and very neat, cost is £ 245.

If you have the diff lock stud on your unit you will only require the linkage parts, to determine this you will need to find the transfer case serial number and check it starts with either 41D or 42D.

If it starts 61D, 62D, 69D or 70D then you will need the diff lock parts to go in the transfer case which are an additional £ 225.

    * CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK, WE ARE WORKING ON AN ALTERNATIVE*

Hope this clears it up, basicly if you get a D2 pre August 2002 you'll need to fit a CDL lever or lever and internals.

You have to remember in the UK the D2 was released in 1998 and in Australia it was released in 1999, so you need to look at the build date on the compliance plate.

    Thanks for all the info.

Does anyone have a spec sheet for the DII?
ie, Ground clearance, approach and departure angels. Wading depth?

And can anyone tell me the difference between the DII and DIIa (i think the a came out after 2003 - 2004)

    Thanks

    From the Owners Handbook

Ground Clearance - not stated (but I have read it is 210mm)
    Approach - 31 degrees
    Departure - 19 (with towbar) 21 (without)
    Wading depth - 500mm

This link to Redbook will give you when the variants were released.
