I would accept that... but the heater is OFF, and it still pumps hot air.. I know it is supposed to be smart and have climate control, but OFF is OFF in my books, there should be no air pumping at all, never mind 45 degree hot air, even when the setting is 16 or "Lo" for that matter

Accept it or not its fact...

Off means the controls that run the HEVAC are off...

This means the air controls and the valves that shut off the hot water to the heater matrix are not being kept closed...

    Off is Not Off....

BTW, the TD5 doesnt use more or less fuel with the system always on!

It seems no matter what the setting is, and even if the A/C is off, it is till pumping hot air out.
Then it's likely that the 'flaps' that direct the cool/heat are stuck/non functioning/buggered.

They are controlled by little servo motors (later D2, or cables with early or D1's) - all directed by the heater/ac controller - you should be able to - with the ignition on - without starting - switch from one mode to another - and hear the flaps move -

If they don't then you are sure to get heat when not required

They could be just stuck, or the signals that tell them to move are not doing the job.

So in essence it could either be an electronics/electrical problem - or purely mechanical that a little grease would solve

    Mate, try it yourself..

Drive along and turn off your system...

    You'll get hot air!

Its been discussed in length on D2AU etc...

He's got nothing broken if it works when the system is "ON"

My D1, and certainly the D2 I have now - do not have valves on the hot water flow to the heater matrix - I was actually thinking about fitting a manual (well a cable operated one - don't want to work too hard) one to the D2, as despite the flaps working fine I am sure the AC works overtime due to hot air 'leaks' round the flaps

Oooopps missed the point that he had the system OFF - fair point

Stopping the flow through the heater matrix could be fatal to the engines cooling flow. Be very, very careful.
