    D2 TD5 fuel economy - bad?

Ok, so here's an old chestnut that comes up every so often.

I am getting between 11 and 12 litres per 100 km on my TD5 D2 auto (mostly towards 12)

I don't consider that to be good fuel economy.

This is with the a/c generally off. City or country at 100 km/h, doesn't seem to make a difference.

Before anyone asks, no I am not running fat tyres or a power chip or a huge roof rack. Stock as a rock, except for a snorkel (hmmmm... could this be a problem?)

My old D1 TDI did 8.5 to 9.5 litres per 100 km all day every day, city, country, a/c, no a/c, no worries.

I have the EGR bypass kit. That seemed to improve the economy briefly, but I may be imagining that.

No other faults appeared on the Rovacom when I had it tested (about 18 months ago now).

I would expect about 10 litres per 100 km to be a reasonable figure for this car and my light right foot. Am I crazy? What are other people getting in similar driving conditions (i.e. don't bother telling me how much you get towing your boat or caravan or with your massive roof rack, because it's not comparable). I'm talking about the city and highway drivers on the highway, not off road and not with mods or accessories.

    ta in advance

    Owen,

Firstly, Rovacom won't usually show an airflow meter fault to the degree that they can be quite poor before the fault appears. You should be getting around 58 to 61 Kg/hr air flow at idle, and full throttle under load at least 550 to 650.

If you see 48 to 50 at idle, and less than 450 under load, then IMHO the Airflow meter is near to not actually doing it's thing. This will cause fuel consumption issues.

The figures you are getting aren't THAT horrific but I agree they aren't ideal if you are driving sensibly. I, too would expect 10l/100 from a Td5.

Try a known working Airflow meter and see what happens

Well my '96 Defender does between 26 and 30 mpg

The "newer" D2 Auto TD5 only does 24 mpg

Too late at night to convert into that new fangled litres per 100kms measurement

Thanks, I had been wondering about the airflow meter. When you talk about flow rates, then presumably this is something that comes back from the Rovacom? I wonder if (now more than a year down the track) I got it hooked back up, I would discover something different about the AFM?

Next question - do you have any experience with non-genuine air mass meters, such as LAND ROVER DISCO TD5 AND DEFENDER TD5 AIR FLOW METER on eBay, also, Land Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 21-Mar-09 16:00:03 GMT)

I take it the genuine part is horrifically expensive.

    Hi Owen,

Using Rovacom, there can be a readout in real time of airflow.

The genuine MAF meter is the only one I have used, and they have reduced a fair bit in price now. Around $390? IIRC. The aftermarket ones ARE cheaper, but I haven't used them yet.

Should be MFK100620 as a part number?

I clean the MAF on mine with contact cleaner when I feel its not going properly or using more fuel than normal and it makes a big difference.
