If i'm 100km out of the CBD i'll wave at all the Discos and Defenders and get about a 50-60% response. If i'm on mountain or outback roads i'll pretty well wave at any 4wd the goes past and get a 70% response.

When i lived in Sydney and had the DSCVRY number plate, i would get a honk and a wave from about 80% of other Disco drivers no matter where i was

I also love the fact that you can say hello to most people in small country towns and still get a good response back...try it in the city and people look at you like you are an idiot.

I tested this while spending two days taking photos of bridges that cross over the Yarra River. Whenever i said hello to anyone approaching me i swear about 90% of people looked at me weird and then started walking away from me quicker than they approached me, they also glanced back occasionally to make sure i wasn't following them. The few that did return my greeting would have been mostly aged over 50.

Hahaha Myles - the time you did that trip in, I'm surprised you had time to see anyone waving back to you.

Anyway - you're right. Every time I've driven across, I get much the same. Kal to Norseman, very few wave - Norseman to about Port Augusta / Whyalla turn-off, most people wave and almost all Landrover drivers. From Port Augusta on - forget it.

I got a wave from a D2 in Kal the other day - probably only because he realised that I had right of way on a corner, and even though he had plenty of room to get around in front of me, he stopped fairly suddenly, smiled and waved me through.

That bloke in the old 40 series Troopy that waved to us outside the video shop on Boulder Road a while back - I often see him around and he always waves - so it must have been the Disco that he was waving at and not your Stage 1.
    Cheers .........

I was heading back into Brisbane last week when i was over taken by a disco that waved at me,I waved back. I think it was the AULRO sticker that helped.

Also as klappers wrote. "Got to wave."

I agree Defender owners wave more. But on a recent Sani Pass trip was greeted by fellow D2 owner "Nice Car" as he was driving by.

I always wave - and usually get waves back...but not from LR3 drivers. Not one to date despite many waves...I guess they appeal to a new age of urban warrior (the type that would have gone for an ML or X5 I suppose)...anyway I have pretty much given up on LR3 drivers for waves (are they really Land Rovers....).

    Cheers

15 odd years ago I lived in the Territory and owned a series 3 station wagon - the old girl didn't like any thing much over 90kph so driving down the highway I'd often have a fair line up of cars, caravans and road trains behind me....then I'd see a big line of traffic coming towards me - headed by another old Landy They were the best waves and the biggest laughs

Now I drive the Fender and here in Cairns I'd say about 90% of other Defender drivers wave, the few that don't generally seem to be using their truck as a work vehicle.

As for Disco drivers (and Rangies and Freelanders)...my apologies, I don't normally wave to you guys because I never see any of you waving to me
Plus there's too many Disco's around town anyway - I'd be driving with my hand up permanently

I now get a wave back from the lady driver of another TD5 D2 in my little village. I had to train her though.

For what its worth in my brief experience of owning Land Rovers which is only just over three months now, I'd say only about 10% to 15% of other Landy drivers wave back and it doesn't change whether I'm driving the standard D2a or the mountain goat D1.The funny thing is you can see from the looks on their faces that most of them aren't even sure why your waving anyway.

I have noticed that Defender drivers nearly always wave back.

Coming from a bike riding background when your out on the road most (80%) of other bike riders wave, except for late model Harley owners who never wave because they know they are superior. Maybe thats the problem with D3 drivers they also own Harleys or maybe its vice versa they are Harley owners who brought D3's because they got sick of helmet hair and dead bugs splattered on their designer black macho leathers?

    cheers,
    Terry
