    Rip Off

Well thought I would do the right thing and try to source second hand parts instead of buying new, you know splash the cash within Australian businesses etc.

Went to a recommended wrecker on this site with a list of approx 10 items looking to spend a grand or two, thinking I would benefit by getting second hand.

    WRONG

I cannot believe in some circumstances these guys want to charge more than I can get the items new.

ARB bullbar, can get one cheaper new
CDL linkage, can get one From LR cheaper (that's a first!)
2 inch lift, can get new spings and shockers $200 cheaper new
Wheels and tyres, can get cheaper new by $100

Cannot believe these guys are in business, obviously taking advantage of parts they know alot of people chase. Well they will not be getting my hard earned, and when they complain the econmony downturn is hurting maybe they will open their eyes and realise people are sick of being ripped off.

Well back to sourcing from OS and more localised suppliers for me. For the sake of minimal extra dollars I'll buy new.

    End of Rant

    Your right.

It is unreal that second-hand parts should cost more than brand new. I understand that there has to be a certain amount included in the cost for the initial purchase of the wreck, labour to remove the parts, shop overheads etc, but the fact remains that second-hand parts will have a shorter life expectency than new.

In theory, this means that if you buy a set of tyres second-hand, they will wear out quicker than a brand new set. You then go back to the wreckers & buy another set. However, if the price is too high to start with, then it is probably more economical to purchase new in the first place.

What would be interesting is to see how much could be made by selling all of the individual components of a car separately, as opposed to selling it as a whole.

Thats why parts are made to wear out.
They make more money out of spare parts,
then selling the car in the 1st place.

Hi admin, have no intention of advising who even on PM, as this would be unfair and it's based on my experience only.

My recent experience was similar - this was for land rover and Nissan parts.

What I learned is that the wreckers now price at 1/2 or more of the recommended retail for new parts. In fact more than one wrecker has said to me new it is $110 so second hand (if he had one) was going to be $55. In this particular case it cost me $19 for a new part by mail order from the UK (less than 7 days) and less than $30 with postage.

I would buy more parts if they cost less and were easier to get. I want to order from my office during the week and bolt on in the weekend.

There is a business here for someone to link with the reputable UK suppliers and offer this stuff here in Aust. It should be as simple as going to a supplier web site, looking at a parts diagram and translating that to a part number and then paying for the order plus postage. With an option for o/night or standard post (extra cost if rush item).

Who will partner me in the business?
Skiboy - soon to known as CheaperLandySpares.com.au

89 Orange Rangie UTE - our play thing - sadly now sold
    75 Rangie/Series/Hybrid/LS3 - Bumblebee with a sting!!!!

Where are you situated, I rang around today for a mate who needed a front drivers window, well known and recommended wrecker here on forum quoted a good price, 2 other L/R wreckers were double the first price, and a wrecker in Wollongong who didn't have the part quoted a Hotline price a further $100 on top of the 2 L/R wreckers, so instead of getting hot under the collar, check out the Markets here or some of the L/R wreckers that support this Forum, PM me if you want names and prices, Regards Frank.

I'm in - If I had the time!!!!!

    Here's an example
CDL linkage lever etc to have CDL in my D2

From a wrecked D2 from this particular wreckers - $900! second hand

Just called LR Dealer in melb - $786.88 brand new genuine parts, would have to order it in though.

Can anyone point me in the direction of who i can source parts from in the UK? I have family over there so can co-ordinate that way. Ashcrofts?

    Any help appreciated.

    Hi Frank, appreciate the offer.
The more time I spend on this forum the more intrenched I am getting with this car! So much for selling a $100k car getting the D2 to save money!

I am in Eastern Suburns Melb (Vermont/Nunawading)

Have looked at all the major wreckers, all the obvious ones, and the major's don't seem to have a CDL available, eg AMV in melb.

    I am looking at
    Bar
    CDL linkage
    Wheel & Tyres
    2inch lift
    Tow points
    Rubber mats
    Snorkel
    Lights

Tha's enough to get me going to the next stage.

Happy to try anyone who will supply what I need at a reasonable price.

    Cheers
