I would be checking this one carefully on the weekend to make sure it isn't the case.

It could be swivel bearings, but is most likely to be one (or more) of the suspension bushes. If original, most of these comprise two steel tubes separated by the rubber bush. The outer one is a press fit into a hole, but the inner one is clamped between two cheeks by the bolt through the middle. It is supposed to be clamped too tightly to move, but if it is slightly loose, it will move slightly on articulation, giving exactly the sound you describe. It will only get worse, and will damage the cheek pieces as well as the bolt. If there is sufficient wear, just tightening the bolts will not fix it.

Other possibilities, as suggested, are tie rod ends, or possibly loose steering box or pitman arm. Another possibility is a cracked chassis, probably near one of the suspension mounting points.

    Thanks for that John.
I'll take a good look at it tomorrow, hopefully this chest infection I have at the moment doesn't do anything to halt my progress. Over the next few weeks, the disco will be parked in the shed and I will be trying to fix every fault that has been annoying me for ages. Will be doing some major servicing as well, and give everything a good look over. The car has done a lot of k's and it wouldn't hurt to change all the fluids and check bad wear and tear and see what might need to be replaced soon.

As far as this ticking noise goes, I'm really hoping its nothing major, like Mr Apocalypse says maybe its just a "land rover thing". My front diff hum could also just be a Land Rover thing, but I've had that since I've owned the vehicle and I know other people who also experience this hum in the diff.
Thanks everyone for your input, I'll let everyone know when I find the problem, just in case someone else also has the same problem.

    Cheers
    Hendrik

I would be more inclined to blame the front prop shaft uni joints.
Very common fault, any "chirping" sounds, much like a cricket???
If so get the double uni re-built ASAP as failure is catastrophic.
Plenty of info on front driveshaft failures on here, have a search.

I'd be looking to see if the spring slightly pops out at the front of the spring perch when the wheel drops.

I'd also look at the chassis/body mount behind the front passengers wheel so see if its cracked through the hole that the bolt passes through.

Also check the propshaft isnt hitting the Xmember under it.

If the lift is reasonable new, also check the shock bolts are tight.

You'll hear a CV from a series of rapid fire clicks rather than a single click. Either that or a bang and no drive.

Well I haven't had a chance to look at the disco yet, its parked in the shed at the moment, won't be able to for some time yet. It could be the cross member, as I didn't space it when I put the lift in. And yes the lift is new, so I'll have a good look at the way the spring sits and also the chassis mounts.
I rebuilt the drive shafts ages ago, and grease them regularly, so I can eliminate that.

    Cheers
