i still dont know why people choose this option over the ECU flash type????
half the cost if its your ECU, about the same cost as the dp chip if you buy a new ECU... power figuers are less than the ECU flash and fuel economy isnt as good.
and you can now have your ECU tune emailed to you!

oh oh and there is a switchable ECU, one that can be switched from power tune to standard tune...still for less than the DP chip

cheers phil

People choose this option because of a slick sales pitch and/or a lack of understanding of all the options.

There are problems with using a piggy back units like these on a TD5 and other unit injector engines (VWs) – Dtronic even withdrew their TD5 product from sale after many problem that they finally admitted they just could not get right. All units already sold were offered a full refund. It has to do with the fuel pressures and the error reporting to the ECU, the piggy unit does not pass these through resulting in the ECU not delivering as well as it otherwise would and sometimes resulting in engine shut down. If you have not had a problem yet there’s a good chance you don’t know you’ve got the 2nd one yet…

This is why the LR specialists (Davis & TRS) rechip the early TD5 – the ECU is opened and the original chip removed from the circuit board replaced with a new one – not just add a plug in unit inline. better yet replace the ECU with a new model...

Tombie2 on this forum (Total Rover Tech) is selling
and supporting in Aus upgraded fuel maps, it is a different file developed specifically for each model of TD5 by
www.bellautoservices.co.uk (I nearly fell over when he told me how many different TD5 variants he has now). This file is uploaded to the ECU and he's selling for stupid prices compared to what is quoted above
if you have a programmable engine ECU – approx early 2002 on with ECU part number NNN***** And if the files he has in stock are not perfect in your car he gets a custom one created for you - I know mine was done on a Sunday and emailed from the UK - try that with a generic on seller...

If you have a non-flashable ECU he is selling exchange replacement units for still much less than mentioned above.

A reprogram of what’s there will always be better than adding in a signal manipulator – that’s all these piggy backs are – they just hold the injector open longer by providing voltage for longer, don’t change the timing increase the number of injections or anything clever, just poor more in.

The market for these piggy back systems came about due to the Jap vehicles still not having the ability to reprogram and the unit sold for a TD5 (or any engine) is the same, they are not even specifically designed for the target vehicle resulting in very low development costs - they should be nearly giving the stupid things away.
