Need some further clarification and help on the CDL installation please.
SWMBO has just returned from the UK, and neatly packed away in her case was my CDL linkage, I'm excited!
I was going to get one of the LR specialists to install but I am sick of paying someone to do things because I do not have the time. After looking through various posts and looking at the install in "The Good Oil" (Are you proud Pedro?) I am going to give it a crack myself. It's just getting a mate gullable enough to help me (I don't have a lot of self confidence with these things) so someone to assist, and consume beer with in these situations, always helps.
Firstly - Do I need to cut the wire on the ECU to stop the TC etc disengaging? If so there are no clear instructions or Pics I can find on how to do this. Is just engaging it after I have started the car a more common option? What are the issues faced with this method?
Secondly - As I have a direct change over unit, there is nothing from the existing lever that needs to be used, besides bolts? How does it connect to the CDL spigot as well as the High Low lever with only the one cable?
Third - Understand the benefits of CDL and how it locks the transfer case, however where and in what circumstances can it be used? When 4WDing should it be engaged all the time? I have read some people indicating they use it in High as well as Low? Is'nt this damaging to the case? When should it not be used?

there is also plenty of info on this site in the projects area or do a search
on the usage I engage mine as soon as I am off the tarmac or on a slippery surface e.g. ice/snow, it seems to give a more positive feel to the ride. I was taught this on a Landrover offroad driving course. in fact I believe the diff lock actually strengthens the drive train rather than the converse but others will be more knowledgable than I.

Thanks Jwb, I do have those instructions, however was hoping there may have been some photo's floating around of the ecu's or wires that need to be cut.
Also just the clarification on how the one cable caters for both CDL and H/L.
It's atually the Ashcrofts lever I have.

I don't recall seeing photos other than ages ago there was a write up on a Disco 2 site that no exists that showed the same wire cut option but located in the center console. You could probably chase it using the circuit diagrams and connector photos on the Rave cd.
I did the retro fit a couple of years back on my 2002 Disco - best mod I've done. I find it no problem. If I don't remember to unlock before switching off you know straight away on the next start and simply do it then.
Enjoy the new capability when you get it in place.

One cable does not caters for both CDL and H/L. Not familiar with the Ashcroft lever specifically but you will find your existing H/L cable will connect with it in the same manner as it connects with your existing H/L lever now. The cable supplied with the Ashcroft lever is the cdl cable only.
Would advise you don't go cutting electrical cables initially.
Get the new lever in and working, get familiar with the quirks of how traction control is enabled and disabled when you engage / disengage the cdl. Then make a decision about whether you want to cut wires or live with the quirks of how traction control works with cdl in a D2.
You may find you can live with things as they are without cutting electrical wires.

i have a cdl kit in mine and i have not cut any wires. if i want to turn the traction control off i enguage the cd turn the car of and restart.
why would u want to loose it for ever?

Thanks Jeff, That's perfect! I remember looking at Urban's tutorial a long time ago, but could not find it again. It has much more detail in it.
I think from the info the guys have posted, I will steer clear of the wire cutting, happy to work the lever in order of preventing the cut off of TC.
The Ashcroft unit DOES come with the Hi Lo gear knob, with CDL. I thought the same thing after I bought it, and was worried, however I believe from the look of it, it's the factory unit that they are having manufactured on the side.

Guys,
Just for clarification on the activation of the CDL with the wires not cut etc, what is the order in engaging and disengaging to prevent the TC lights etc coming on?
Is it turn the car on then engage then vice versa?
If someone can clarify that would be great.
