    disco 2 front prop shaft

    Hi

am looking to fit a disco 2 prop shaft (with double cardan joint) to the 110. Can anyone give me a length to make sure it fits.
    thanks

it will bolt straight in, they are simmilar in length. you will however need a D2 input flange for the trans case as the bolt patterns are different.

    the differance is about 20mm.

left is the D2 and right is the defender one, as you can see the defender one has a wider uni cross. i took this end off (pulled the slip joint apart) and
fitted it into the D2 shaft, so i had DC joint at one end and a wide uni at the other. the splines have the locators in the same place for phasing.
i got the D2 flange kit from karcraft, bout $130

    cheers phil

How come you are doing that? Have you got a big lift?

There seem to have been a number of issues/failures with the DC on Discos (not greasable...) and when they go bang they take out a lot of expensive kit.

Yep, unintentionally seems I have a very big lift. I ordered from factory Donaldson springs standard height which is according to their info is about 35mm taller than standard. I checked with another aulro member who has a 110 with a lift kit and mine is 30 - 50mm taller than his. My previous springs were really flat so the bump stops were hitting the front axle. So i expected a lift with the new springs. But not a 2 inch + lift.

I have had steering problems related to the lift and a vibration which seems to be from the front prop shaft following the spring change. Some have suggested a double carden shaft from D2 might be a solution. I have had castor correction bushes fitted which did improve the steering. I am ok with the springs and the height if I can sort out this vibration problem. Alternaively spend $300 and get new springs to lower it to closer to normal.

So just clarifying discowhite, do I need to change the flange at the transfer case end or something on the shaft before fitting a D2 shaft?

    thanks

Do you have a Defender with an LT230 transfer or a 110 with a LT95 gearbox?

If its a LT230 transfer then you just need to fit a Disco2 front output flange to the transfer. If its an LT95 in a 110 then I'm not sure that there is a factory solution to the problem, and you may need to get an adaptor and shaft made up.

Stage 1's had a DC front shaft, so there's a solution there too.

BTW, IIRC only TD5 ('01 on ??) Defenders had the bigger uni that Phil shows above.

<edit> and hardy Spicer have a HD DC that replaces the OE one. It uses greasable uni's and centre cross using common Japanese sized bits that are bigger than the Land Rover ones or you can go the custom US one that Slunnie used.

    Its a LT95 box, 1989 model 110.

You may get away with running a Stage 1 front output flange on the gearbox and a Stage 1 shaft like what Rick has suggested, but I would most definately check the lengths as the stage 1 was leaf sprung and the axle may be further forward than on the coilers. These shafts are good because the DC is big.

If it were me, I would have one built to suit and then you dont have to stuff with the output flange.

Found a part no FRC2175. Just need to check the length. Gearbox is the same so should probably match up.

You will need a DC output flange also - this is different.
