    Disco 2 Questions

I posted this in the Intro section, but thanks to some good members Have been directed to this area. I am hoping somone can help with the questions below.

    Hello All, another newbie
I am new to this forum. I am looking to purchase a Discovery diesel, 2002 to 2004 vintage with 7 seats.(Large family)

I have test driven a few. The stand out is a 2002, 7 seater TD5 with factory air to the third row as well as factory DVD with outlets to both rear rows. The asking price is $22,990 drive away from a dealer. Is this what they call the 7SE?

It also seemed more responsive than others I have driven. It is one owner with full logbook history. It has 150,000km.

It does not have the manualy operated centre diff lock, I am guessing it relies on the traction control to keep momentum going. Has anyone had problems with this.

Is it possible to modify the transfercase to lock the center diff when the lever is set to 4L or should I look for a 2003/2004 model which I recall bought back the driver operated CDL. I must admit, I like the looks of the 2003/2004 model with the dual lights. Is there much difference between the 2002 model & the 2003/2004 model, apart from the lights?

I also found it hard to shift the transfercase lever from H to L & back again. Is this normal?

Is there anyway of testing that the airbag suspension works? Will pressing the up button raise it enough that I will see a difference? Where is the compressor located?

Is there anything else I should be looking for, ie rust, oil leaks, life of airbag susspension etc. What sort of price should I be looking to purchase a 7 seat Discovery in the 2002/2004 year runs?

Does the TD5 have a timing belt or gears? Is there a free on-line workshop manual available?

Sorry about all the questions, I am just trying to make an informed decision before handing out dollars.

    Welcome,
All the answers you seek are in this forum but I can supply some.Am sure all the SE7 came out with air suspension.
The CDL is present in some up till 2001 but not connected, you can tell by getting under the car and feeling the top of the transfer case for the activation lever, suggest you look at any of the threads with CDL
The td5 has a timing chain not belt, but would suggest you find out if the oil pump bolt has been checked.Look at any thread about this issue,as it will kill the engine.
Sounds like the car may have had an ECU upgrade if it goes much better that the others.
You can puchase the RAVE workshop CD for about $10 on EBAY well worth it
Not sure about the cost, but dont see to many SE7 4 sale around my way.
Hope this helps but if you spend some time looking thru past threads on the topics you will find your answers
    Cheers Ean

Hi foreverdiesel welcome to the forum.
It Probably is the SE7 as this came with a DVD and air con to the rear as factory options. It may also have ACE as an option. However if it has front fog lamps then its likely to be an ES model which has all this as std (with the exception of the DVD player)

Price wise, the 2.5D SE7 is listed on Red Book at $14.5k to $17.0k for average condition and between 110,000klm to 180,000klm at $55k new (std, without options) the options will add more so will including the on road costs.
    see here http://www.redbook.com.au/used-cars/...d=1230B1E7A7DE

if the transfer case is stiff from hi to low it may be just technique or not much prior use, this should free up with use.

the TC will work well on its own, but a CDL install will require the lever plus the internal g'box bits so its a bit more complicated.

To test compressor and activate the SLS open drivers window, get out, shut all doors and lean in and press the SLS height button (Called "off road mode" in the book). If the rear takes around 20-30 seconds then all good.

Rust wont be an issue on that year unless its on the coast all year round.

For diesel info, wait for others to respond, I'm a V8 mongrel

    best of luck

Thanks all. I have also done some searching in this forum. Very informative site. I did initialy set out to buy a diesel 2003 or 2004 model, however the 2002 Discovery SE7 has been the best I have seen so far. I will have to think a bit more.

The 03MY would be a better version to buy than the 02MY purely for the CDL if you intend to go off-road or beach drive a lot. If that's not the main intention then I wouldn't be bothered about it. Just bear in mind the 02MY will not have the fittings to install a CDL if you later want to.
