I've seen a few 4x4's getting around with a stand (pole) fixture that has a light attachment to it that stands vertically up the back window and connects in behind the rear mounted back spare wheel.
I've been looking for something like that, as it would greatly help with getting my boat/trailer organised on the boat ramp in the early morning before the day break.
Does anyone know where these can be fitted, how much and where? I think the ones in the pictures are Kaymar, but all they seem to do are landy's and Patrols.
I just cut a 3 section extending tent pole to suit. Welded a bracket on the end, U-Bolted it to the spare wheel mount, wired everything up and was way cheaper than the Kaymar ones. Will get some pics today and post them.
Take your spare wheel carrier off the back door (you will need to remove the interior lining from the door). Make up a couple of spacers out of flat bar to sit behind the wheel carrier & drill to same pattern. One spacer to be the same length as the foot of the wheel carrier, the other about 75 mm longer, and drilled so that the extra length protrudes above the foot of the wheel carrier.
You can then weld any type of pole you want onto this 75mm of extra spacer, and then bolt it all back onto the door and re-fit your wheel. I used a length of square tubing with a bit of angle iron welded to the top to mount the light on, and ran the wiring down the centre of the square tubing. A fixed length pole was good enough for what I wanted, but you could just as easily weld an adjustable length pole to the same arrangement.
All but one of the original bolts holding the wheel carrier to the door were long enough to re-use with the "spacers fitted". I had to put a slightly longer bolt in one position.
It took me all of about half an hour to knock this up, including a coat of hammer finish kill-rust paint. I was removing the wheel carrier anyway to re-drill the centre holes and turn the carrier upside down, as I had just had larger tyres fitted and the rear door wouldn't close with the spare on. Doing it this way also fixed the problem I was having with clearance behind the larger tyre for the rear window wiper, as it moved the tyre out from the body of the door just enough to provide clearance for the wiper arm.
I don't have any welding equipment or skills so for mine, I used a Painter's extention pole. Mounted the light to the top, ran the wire down the centre, it's telescopic so clears the roof and gives 360degree capability. I used 'Make-a-Bracket' to mount it to the wheel carrier. I made a right angle piece for it to sit on and riveted it to the carrier and cut a couple of strips, wrapped them around the pole to hold it and riveted it too to the wheel carrier.
