    Xenons in D2a???

My '03 D2a (new style headlights) is going through headlight globes. One every several months. Does not seem to be happening on one side more than the other.

Is it worth upgrading to Xenons and at the same time upgrading the wiring or should I just run some more wire?

    Cheers

Not sure what globes you have in the D2a.

I upgraded the headlights in my earlier D2 to HID / Xenon a couple of years back. After driving with them (I also have a pair of Hella Predators on the front), I would never own another vehicle with conventional headlights again, unless living in and mainly driving in city only.

Where I'm working at the moment, have various Toyotas with conventional headlights - like driving something with candles out front after driving the Disco.
    Cheers .........

The D2a has 4 H7 lights. As you'd know from replacing them they are reasonably easy to get to once everything is unscrewed but there is stuff all room to do anything in the light pod.

I don't know if anyone's even put a wiring harness upgrade in a D2a. I talked with Drivesafe about this and we decided at the time (a few years ago) that it was to difficult. I think the HID kit might be more achievable provided the back of the bulb doesn't extend further back and mean you have to leave off the sealing caps as this would let dust and water in to the unit.

Mine was a base model D2a and didn't have the headlight levelling, if you have that the pod may be better or worse, I don't know. I believe HID was an option in some markets but not Australia. So there maybe something you can get from overseas that will make everything fit.

As for the blown globes... Are they only high beam or a mixture? Are you still using 55W bulbs as anything higher generates too much heat and will also shorten the life of the polycarbonate lens.and FF reflectors. Also check none of the plugs into and the pods have any corrosion of the pins and check the earth points under the bonnet are all sound.

No not high beam. Only ever the low beam that blows. I seldom use high beam as the lights are really good as they are.

All the earths are OK as are the terminals. Contact cleaner on all electrical connections when they are disconnected is standard for me.

They are the standard 55w, Narva 3750K.

    Headlights

Our D2a has blown low beam headlight globes since new. They usually last 6-12 months, haven't noticed any one side more than the other. We drive with low beams on most days (country driving). Replaced the last one only a couple of weeks ago. Never had to replace a high beam globe, but then they are not used anywhere near as much as the low beams.

I have tried all manner of brands but haven't found any better than the others.

A problem is the plastic screws in the top of the grill getting very worn from being removed so many times... (have to remove the centre grill so that you can remove the headlight unit...)

There doesn't appear to be any vibration that could cause globe failure. I put it down to an electical spike(s) somewhere/sometime that shortens the globe life.

    Cheers,
    Chris
