    More power for TD5

    I have a 2000 Disco 2 TD5 Auto with 142000 kms on the clock. Like many others I am after a bit more power, especially when overtaking at highway speeds. The obvious choice is of course chipping but there are so many choices out there I really don't know which one to go for. One of my main concerns is that having an earlier TD5 the engine has the plastic head dowels and if I get a chip or ECU flash the increased engine temperatures may cause them to warp and the head to shift.

    Also, I intend to keep my Disco for the long term and as it is already 10 years old I am wondering if the extra power may significantly reduce the life of the engine or drivetrain.

    If I could have some real world feedback from people that would be appreciated. Any info you can give me in regard to reliability, driveability, fuel economy and performance would be appreciated.

    The plastic dowels are simply to guide the head back into place .... they don't actually carry any load.

    Have a search around the forum .... there's heaps of info here and guys that can do it for you.

    call tombie2.... he'll give you all the power you need. search the forum for proton engery pills....

    the plastic dowels are not an issue they only locate the head during assembly and thats it.

    if your worried about it replace them with the steel ones.


    big red did 70ish+Km with the big chip and never missed a beat.

    Your only option may be a Davis Performance Landys ECU upgrade through him or one of his distributors.

    Tombie wont do yours because you don't have a flashable ECU - unless you change to a flashable ECU.

    TRS in SA will re power your existing ECU, give them a call and speak to phil..

    They did my 2001 td5 and it had 190,000 on it its got 220 now and so far so good...

    We have 2 x TD5s with the TRS chip.
    One is getting more power and same fuel economy. (265x75x16 tyres)
    The other is getting mpore power and often better fuel economy depending on driving (245X70x16 tyres)

    The chip from TRS has a bit of surge about the 1700 to 1800RPM (School zones in 3rd, slightly annoying but by no means a hindrance or deal breaker for the upgrade.) otherwise, very happy with the upgrade on both vehicles. The intercooler upgrade is next on the list.
    I would advise an EGT gauge, because if you stay stuck into it you will reach high temps.
    The EGTs are no problem with normal to enthusiastic driving styles. But it is possible to sustain unhealthy temps if you drive it like a
    'Bogan"

    Was under the impression from talking to phil at TRS that they only re-power to kw/hp that keeps standard Ex tmps...I guess as you say if you fang it constantly then it may be an issue...

    Yes I was told this also. But the gauge says different to poular opinion.
    I must admit I did not have the gauge before the upgrade so cant tell by how much the temps have increased or if these temps are actually similar to factory..
    If I hammer it I can hit 840.
    The probe is about 50mm upstream from the Turbo mounting flange.
    I backed off after this temp was reached and the EGT dropped immediately and No, I only had this temp for undr a second and barely 2 second above 720.
    Normal temps between 340 and 660 from town to highway @130km and overtaking. Once established dropping back to 480
