    Engine Oil

    Hello Everyone,,

I have just had my Discovery TD5 serviced and have noticed the engine oil they used was 15w/40, going through the RAVE cd it recommends 5w/40 or 5w/30... Should I have them change the oil??? will it make a difference to the engine etc????

    Thankyou for your time Vince

The lower number refers to the cold viscosity. It should be fine as it's summer most places in Oz. I would probably change it before heading to the snow country.

I would change it to 5w**, as the volume of oil to the head and camshaft etc first thing is of most importance in a Td5. 15w40 is IMHO unsuitable unless in quite high ambient temps.

In my old RRC 4.6 I had a vdo oil pressure gauge and temp gauge.
The lower viscosity oil build up pressure much quicker, ran slightly cooler especially in Synthetic form and being a new motor, ran quieter.
I did try by a friends recommendation a different brand not Penrite which I swear by and that was 20/50 from memory.
On start up noisy and under pressure it ran hotter.

That was petrol and a new motor but thats just my experience.

5W/40 Havoline fully synthetic in the D1. Works a treat, giving me the assurance that lubrication starts sooner rather than later.

I'd get it changed for 5w/40. 15w is too heavy.

    I'm using Penrite SinDiesel 5w/40 ... 'cause she's been a bad girl

You have to wonder about some service mechanics.
It seems only a certain % actually read specs sheets.
We have had the same problem with the Bush Fire Brigades Navarra ute. Can't recall the exact grade Nissan stipulates, but the area command changed service contractors to the local Shire Council and the kid servicing it just dumped in 15W-40 " 'cause that's what the grader uses..."
The brigade Captain got the original service tech back and drained it and used the grade of syn/semi-syn oil that Nissan specs.

BTW, as said above, you'll get away with the 15W-40 during summer, but anything much under 10*C (depending on the oils viscosity index) and you'll see the oil starting to get a little heavier than ideal.

On the subject of Nissan ZD engines Rick, I once DID that, filled a ZD25 in a Pathfinder with 15w40 and the oil LEVEL lamp stayed on!

It was then that I realised it should've had 5w40 (I have heaps of THAT because we use it in Td5/6's ) so I changed it out straight away, and the level lamp went out.????

I have NO idea Why, but thats what happened
