No. It should be there even without the code.
Sounds like you need to do the firmware update to make sure you have the P38a support.
If you are seeing "kernel firmware 1.06" at start up your update revision is 1.04 or earlier this means the P38a support isn't loaded.

Once you have done the update once you'll find it is very simple to do.

Don't worry about enabling the overwrite settings config option. You don't need it.

Paul, I can't thank you enough. I did the upgrade (thanks for the instructions). When I went back into the Nanocom, the P38 was on the first page. I loaded the unlock codes PROPERLY this time and it saved them correctly.

I will have to wait until tomorrow to test on the vehicles
