    Nanocom must do's for Tdci

Just received my Nanocom for $378 thanks to favorable exchange rate from euros..... have done the regstration and set the unlock codes. So now - advice from members sought - what are the essentials that I should do first up with this unit? Save my map file? Jigger with the immobiliser settings? Anything I absolutely must NOT do? Thanks in advance.

I would humbly suggest that you should start by downloading and reading this Nanocom owners user guide for the Puma defender and Ipack software.

    http://web.nanocom.it/download/2007%...and%20IPAC.pdf

Then you may appreciate that the software provided does not actually provide the ability to Save your map file or Jigger with the immobiliser settings.

Hi Colin, I actually downloaded and read every document from your website that related to either the Nanocom Evo or the Puma defender including: LUCAS 10AS ALARM-PUMA; WABCO D TYPE _DEFENDER-PUMA; V1_2_1A_2_NANOCOM_EVOLUTION_USER_GUIDE; GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT OBD DIAGNOSTIC and the evo_upgrade_manual. This is probably why I am confused a little - information overload to my aging brain!!

This is from the 'Lucas 10AS alarm Puma' document - does this refer to another Nanocom or can these settings not actually be changed?

"Arm on lock: This setting configures the alarm to not set whenever the vehicle is locked using the plip or the key. Setting this to DISABLED effectively turns off all alarm protection although it does not affect the immobiliser. This can be disabled using the PLIP IMMOBILISE and KEY IMMOBILISE. Turning off all three literally turns the alarm ECU into a central locking controller only."

This is from the general info on OBD idagnostics document:

"SETTING FUNCTIONS: These functions allow the user to see and in some cases modify the functional options (ENABLE DISABLE) or some parameters (NUMERIC or LIST OF VALUES) of the ecus."

So how does one know which parameters can be modified? By trying them?

This is from the users guide:

    "DIAGNOSTIC FILES
During a diagnostic session, you can generate file reports of the data that you find. Note however that is only available if there is a button with this icon
-The dynamic readings are stored in CSV files that you can open with EXCEL and you are then able to see the values in listed in columns and also create graphic lines with them.
    - The “Settings”, can be store in CSV format.
    - The faults are stored in as a TXT file that can be opened with all text editors.
    - The map files that are not copyright protected are stored in MAP format
    - The map file protections are stored in TUN format"

This from a previous post by yourself: ".......I am the owner of Blackbox solutions that does indeed produce and supply the Nanocom which has teh ability to read and write maps. However we do not get involved in producing performance improving maps ourselves and suggest you contact pete Bell fof this."

I thought that this might mean that a map file can be saved on an SD card and re-installed later if a problem occurred with the file in the ECU for some reason?

Obviously I am on a steep learning curve and will search the forum for how other members use their units.

Thank you for your very quick delivery of the purchased unit and prompt response to my query.

Hi again Colin, one other thing for clarification - in the evo upgrade manual there is an option during the process to create a restore file for the evo unit - my unit appears to have shipped with the latest firmware (it displays "Global Upgrade Level: 20120605") so my question to you and/or other forum users is: can you create a restore file without running the update process? There is nothing I can find in any documentation that describes this. I assume from the info in the upgrade manual that it is a good idea to have a restore file.

    cheers, Martin

    Martin

Since Blackbox Soutions took over ownership and control of the Nanocom, despite many concerns and reservations of existing owners, BBS has done nothing other than improve things.

It has not always been easy to impliment the changes we have.

The current upgrade process we currently now provide really negates any need for saving a back up copy anyway.

So there is no longer any real need for this.

I'm also new to the Nanocom stuff.
A friend of mine has an older nanocom and he was able to disable the PLIP IMMOBILIZER AND PASSIVE IMMOBILIZER, so if the remote key (FO is lost or damaged I can still open and start the vehicle.

I purchased the Nanocom EVO so I could have some control over the settings in the ECU, Check and clear faults, etc. including having a copy of the remap in case the ECU decides to go belly up. After all I paid dearly for a remap and I expect to be able to use it in the same vehicle if something happens (as it did recently)

I'm I to understand by the comment made above that I wont be able to disable the PLIP IMMOBILIZER AND PASSIVE IMMOBILIZER and also this unit doesn't allow you to copy the fuel map to have it as back up ?

If that's the case it's a waste of money.

    Hiya applemac
As Martin pretty much pointed out, and something i seem to have overlooked confirming to him on this thread, I had indeed forgotten that the Puma Defender does still have the Lucas 10AS alarm system in which the settings mentioned and listed by Martin from the 10AS System document can indeed be changed.

As this is an older legacy system from the TD5 Defender, so i am not sure as to it's degree of interaction with the Instrument pack and EMS CAN BUS systems.

In respect of reading and writing Map Files, this has always only been possible with the Nanocom on the TD5 EMS.

The current software for the Puma Defender CAN BUS ECU's was specifically written solely for these ECU's before we took over ownership of the Nanocom and although we have done some debugging on it, we have not delved very deeply into it in respect of reviewing provided functionality etc.

However with the introduction of the 2012 MY Defender there has been a change in the engine ECU and a new CAN BUS type ABS ECU has also replaced the previous legacy version. Although technically the existing software should work on the new EMS, we understand that the new EMS does not communicate with the Nanocom as it should and of course there is no coverage at all for the new CAN BUS type ABS ECU.

Those keeping abreast with our ongoing Nanocom developments will know that we are currently working on developing software for the Nanocom that will allow us to introduce coverage for other CAN BUS based Vehicles like the Discovery 3.

This is however being developed entirely as Generic functionality for all and any CAN BUS based systems used in any and all Land Rover vehicles and will be providing CCF editing and ECU re flashing.

Of course this will automatically become applicable to the CAN BUS systems in the Puma Defender, including the 2012 ones.

    Thank for clarifying that.
I have a TD5 2005, thus a LUCAS 10AS. I was just able to Disable the Plip alarm, Plip Imobilize and Passive Immobilize.

Still waiting for a 2gb SD Card to put in the EVO.
That's another issue. 2GB SD cards are getting increasingly harder to find in local stores. No one keeps such small cards in stock any more.
I found some, but is there a good reason why you can't use larger then 2GB Cards ?

There is quite a decent section on page 13 of the Nanocom Evolution User guide regarding SD cards

    http://web.nanocom.it/download/V1_3%...ER%20GUIDE.pdf

    which states

The Nanocom Evolution supports SD or SDHC cards up to 8GB

    Thanks BBS Guy

I have a user manual that states 2GB or less and does not support SDHC.
See attachment.NANOCOM EVOLUTION USER GUIDE V1.2.1A.doc - NANOCOM EVOLUTION USER GUIDE V1_2a.pdf

I assume 2GB will be plenty anyway.
