Another possibility has occurred to me overnight. That we may be looking at a murder/suicide by the copilot - possibly as a terrorist act. With intruder resistant cockpit doors these days, if he overpowered the captain, there would be nothing anyone else could do.

I think this is unlikely, but still a possibility.

You never know if it true or not however the news was saying that not all airlines check the stolen passport data base. Guess which camp this one falls into. If true with all the security you have to contend with to go on a flight makes you wonder why they bother.

The stolen passports seem to be gaining relevance.

INTERPOL say 4 more passports could be suspect.

And the 2 confirmed stolen have been on there database for over a year.

Would not this problem be flagged at Immigration when you check in? I thought they always scanned your passport, and when I was in KL last year they did.

Watching the ABC 24 news program, they said 39,000 passports worldwide are stolen each year, & are placed on a database. The US, & UK , according to them, are a couple of the few countries that actually monitor that data base, 100%. Most of the stolen passports are used for illegal immigration, it seems, Bob

It seems to be an optional step that is rarely taken:

They have certainly scanned my passport when I've been through KL, but I don't know if they actually do a live check to the Interpol data base.
