if the plane crashed into the ocean there would be wreckage surely ? planes are mostly aluminium ? if it dropped below radar would this cut out the communication to the planes maker etc. that sort of stuff would go via satellite ?

She was actually talking about Border Security - the Customs Doco (shows real life fisheries and immigration interceptions) but then got confused when the Customs guys asked did she mean Sea Patrol the fake drama and confused said yes and the ridicule followed.

Wouldn't some kind of electrical failure which disabled the conrols and communications be the most likely cause?

Yeah, but you're still in a signal area and your phone is still on, whereas they would have been told to turn off their phone before takeoff at KL, I assume, and then have flown out of signal range, so the connection would have dropped out.

Not in this model of Boeing wre are about 10 back ups in case of failure.
Experts also saying that structural terminal failure is very rare so it would be interesting if something when wrong in the cockpit.
You can bet that some nuts are going to mention possible UFO intervention as the cause for the missing plane......
