In the 60s the US could see the writing on a cigarette box from space, now they can track phones, internet, etc, but have no idea where this plane is.

Maybe they don't want anyone to find it.

    Signals from space

It was being stated that information from the Rolls Royce Engines was being received for four hours after the 'disappearance'.

A bit over a hour ago this was changed to Satellite information was being received for four hours??? This maybe a case of those leading the search not understanding how a 'ping' works.

To ping a IP address, a burst of data is sent containing a echo request packet to the address of the intended receiver and this key is responded to by that address as a echo, the returned data can then be analysed for time taken and any data loss.

As GPS satellites are used for this service there is almost continuous coverage across the globe.

Ref; Understanding the Ping and Traceroute Commands - Cisco

    The Ping Command

The ping command is a very common method for troubleshooting the accessibility of devices. It uses a series of Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Echo messages to determine:

Whether a remote host is active or inactive.

The round-trip delay in communicating with the host.

    Packet loss.

The ping command first sends an echo request packet to an address, then waits for a reply. The ping is successful only if:

the echo request gets to the destination, and the destination is able to get an echo reply back to the source within a predetermined time called a timeout.
The TTL value of a ping packet cannot be changed.

Radar Shows Plane Deliberately Flew Toward Indian Ocean: Reports

Yes, now they suspect it was deliberately turned and flown west along a normal flight corridor with defined waypoints. So, hijacking becomes a possibility again.

As for why the US didn't pick it up, is it right they don't have blanket continuous coverage, but have to turn their satellites towards a target, so probably weren't focussed on the search area at the time. They're probably looking now, but there's nothing to see.
