All they need is a SPOT tracker velcroed to the dashboard, or even a paranoid passenger could blue tack their own SPOT tracker to their window.

give velocity, heading, altitude in 10 min intervals

they could tell a damn site more from a $150 investment than from a multi million dollar avionics suite, and the combined military and technology might of half a dozen countries, works for me

I guess it doesn't really matter. None of that would have saved their lives and it shows that answers to how or why the died isn't worth that much. Imagine how much LESS media would be making out of this if they had something like that fitted. It's actually cost effective not to have something like that fitted.

as far as I'm concerned it hasn't crashed until a piece of wreckage can be found and identified as being from MH370 or at the very least from a 777

With a Yagi (directional) antenna we could pick up the tone from over 8km way. As the antenna is directional, once we had a tone, we had a direction. We would just draw a line on a map and then drive around until we got more tones. It sends out 3 fading tones (each tone has less transmission power) so the more tones you get, the closer you are. If you had the last tone then you were usually within 50m or so which could still be hard to find in thick bush but we could go further away and use the Yagi to get the direction and then draw 2 intersecting lines to get a more accurate location.

I know it would be hard to locate something like this below the sea but we used a yagi that someone could make it their back shed. I would thing with the right equipment you could make a dish to be far more directional and that would be even better for locating the thing. Then cut down the frequency the tones are sent and increase the signal strength accordingly.

All this from a $50 component that isn't in a million dollar planes.

I might have to start including my own in my luggage in the future.

you were using it in ideal circumstances.

The ones that are in use in the black box are not in ideal circumstances.

Firstly they are transmitting from inside the black box AND often inside the Aircraft.

Secondly they dont always get a clear line of sight out of debry fields... and they dont always wind up with the antennae facing in a useful direction.

a very rough analogy for what the black box is up against and your scenario would be this.

Imagine if your plane flew into a dumpster then someone closed the lid. After that they moved the dumpster into a hire yard that delt soley with loaning out dumpsters on that day the yard had a complete hire out return. Theres 16 enterances into the yard and the guy on the forklift was a real jackson pollock when it came to placing the dumpsters.

you dont know when your container came into the yard or which enterance it came in on.

its 15 minutes to the closing time for the yard and you are 5 minutes away from the containers, you must exit the yard before they close.

Where is your RC plane?

On top of all of that, as with all things about the black box, if the pinger works, thats great. The purpose of the black box is to protect the recorded data thats inside the box, if the rest of it is shaken to shrapnel, it doesnt matter just so long as the data survives.
